like the perfect snapshot into the late 90s alternative scene and the music industry as a whole. told through the stories of the brian jonestown massacre and the dandy warhols as they fall into the weirdest band rivalry ever…

a messy & intimate look at my chemical romance in their revenge era catching them between new jersey basements & future arena rock superstardom . the band is funny & sweet & gross in about equal measure , they clearly all love each other a lot + there’s some great performances in there as well . it’s definitely a bit harrowing to see gerard’s alcoholism on full display , but as a portrait of the band it gives a lot of context to how the band was formed , why they became the standard bearers for 2000’s emo , why they would eventually break up (& come back together) . for a double feature i’d recommend following this up with ‘the black parade is dead’ to see them at their absolute (2000’s) peak

A documentary that was born all because someone once found a 7” single from an unknown Detroit band by the name of Death. Turns out the band of 3 brothers had essentially nailed the sound of punk music years before it had become a thing. As a result of the documentary the band reunited and began touring again, decades after breaking up.

profiles of indie bands bought by majors during the 90s. super interesting read if you want to know more about the alternative boom in the 90s and early 00s mainstream.

if you’re a wikipedia addict like me and you like going down internet rabbit-holes, this is a cool website that will take you to random old websites that haven’t been updated in a while. mostly it‘s a lot of old personal websites and blogs which makes it a really nice time capsule from before the internet died.
