chronology is overrated!!!! retrospection is an important part of any experience!!! also great for leaving little reviews at the end of particularly riveting entries, so that you know which ones are worth a reread when you flip through out of morbid curiosity years down the line

i just re-read my journal from the last year and used a different color pen to leave little notes to past me, since last me was writing this for future me. and in this way i time travel between selves and feel whole

nikau it’s never purposeful to go back through them, last time one of them fell off the shelf when i bumped it and out of curiosity i opened it. once i do that i can’t put it down, and then i feel weird for a while, like im back there, time travel not for the faint of heart

Ok now THIS is one of the most interesting takes I’ve seen in a while. Do you use sticky notes or just leave space in your journals???

sofe a bit of both!!! i write in the margins a lot, but i write pretty densely in my journal so there isn’t much real estate for notes, so i also stick in a lot of paper based souvenirs that flip up to reveal notes scrawled on the back

nikau ok huge yes to the paper artifact flaps… I have been doing that for years but didn’t ever think of doing it retroactively. You are revolutionary I will have to think deeply on this

I used to have a method of journalling where i’d open to a random blank page and just start there. chronology is overrated and ill tell you, it’s a much more interesting read few years later In this random order. kind of like a puzzle sometimes to figure out timelines which can be fun

I am a pretty obsessive documenter. I seem to have bad memory, which got me into keeping record of things as much as i can. I’ll be taking photos on my iphone, videos on my camcorder (for onion vlogs i make every month), and i keep FOUR diaries with all different purposes. 1: sorta like a gratitude journal. Simple bullet points of things i “liked, lacked, learned, longed for” and thank yous. 2: a “throw up” notebook where i throw up all my thoughts. 3: a simple scheduler thats a weekly format hobonichi. 4: an hourly day-to-day diary that i fill up retroactively to learn any patterns and habits. Kinda like self-research.

I was really good about this from 2013-2017 and it’s magical to re-read my old entries! Making it my springtime resolution to start keeping a regular diary again so 2034 me can look back and go, ahhhhhhhh

romanticise ur blunders & ur missteps, bc that is just part of being a creature. if u saw a duckling fall flat on its face and scramble 2 its feet u wouldn't judge the freakin duckling, u would think it was the cutest thing ever. because it is. we r just organisms in big ungainly bodies, and that is part of our charm. tripping over ur own feet is maybe the most adorable thing u can do. like awwhh u tripped on the pavement </333 this extends 2 social interactions 2. messaging exes that u miss them, making a joke that doesn't land, mishearing/not knowing/forgetting something, etc??!!?! SO SWEET. genuinely such wonderful & important & adorable things 2 do. i think this is maybe the best thing i've ever managed 2 train my brain 2 do. it isn't foolproof but it makes life a lot gentler.

just about everything that happens to you will be interesting to your future self/your descendants/archaeologists. immortalise your to do lists, shopping lists, packing lists, things that loved ones say, things that strangers say, the phrases you hear that would make a good band name. brainstorm what to do on the weekend, list your cravings, the songs stuck in your head, transcribe birdsong, etc. i track my periods & my finances in my journal. sometimes if i really want to take a photo of something i'll restrain myself and draw it in my journal instead. sometimes i take notes for uni in there, or draft sewing patterns, or sketch when im bored. journals are self-portraits!!!!!!!
