if you have a local coffee shop, go there and don’t drive to a starbucks or dunkin
get a library card
befriend your neighbors
get plugged into the goings on of your town or city
repeat local legends
become friendly with your favorite store’s employees
read in your local park
patronize your local artists
the way to plant roots is to stay in the same place for as long as possible! you don’t get that by driving out of town for every meal and beverage and thing you want

I love this and agree w it so hard, especially having moved to New York and actually finding like the neighborhood I live in has a strong sense of community bc everyone actively participates in it and it’s really nice! my neighbors say hi to each other, some people support chains but there aren’t many so it’s mostly local business that everyone eats/shops at, and they put a lot of care into making everything walkable and safe. everyone lowkey cares and that’s okay and honestly good!! :)

find that local cafe or business when on holiday / solo traveling / living somewhere new.

Not only can you find gorgeous food or unique trinkets while supporting locals but you can surprisingly make friends.
Small talk can lead you anywhere !!
Talking to the workers and people, becoming a regular visitor and making that stop consistently really makes a difference to your experience.
plus you become less like a tourist and more like ‘just a person from somewhere’.

become a regular somewhere

try going to a local library once a week, or a gym, a museum, a thrift store, cafe, etc. if you find you like the vibe of a certain place, hang out there and be pleasant with the employees, after a while, they will remember you and will likely chat with you
this is more of a method to get used to talking to people, of course an employee is getting paid to talk to you, but in my own experience, i love taking to regulars!
