really the rec is for whatever local video store is in ur area (nyc people sound off i guess). ANYWHOOO i've been a member for minute now and the catalogue is so much larger than any streaming site and i get to go talk to the lovely staff and we exchange our love for the different movies we're watching, akin to the library/local bookstore. the digital ephemera lacks that human touch.

In 2024 I'm cancelling as many streaming services as I can and turning to the video store instead. I'm a member at Videotheque and Vidiots in LA.
1. I find my watching to be way more intentional renting a DVD or Blu-Ray. I have to return it so I have to watch it and this is what I picked.
2. The browsing is much more pleasurable in person than the dang scroll! You can pick up a bunch of stuff and put it back when you figure out what you want.
3. If I pay late fees I feel like I am making a charitable donation.
4. Video store clerks are so cool!

I can’t recommend it enough tbh. I went in there to return a few I had rented last week and got to spend 10 minutes lost in the shelves, just searching through films. There is such a great feeling of comfort I get by being surrounded by so many physical reproductions of the medium I love so mucchhh. It’s like my version of a museum.

if yr ever in atlanta for an extended period of time, check out videodrome, our only video rental store in the city ! they have an really cool collection of international, arthouse, independent, and mainstream films (currently im going through abbas kiarostami’s filmography)
there’s something so refreshing about seeking out and consuming media without the influence of the internet, away from algorithms that tell you what yr supposed to like—it’s nice to browse around and take the ownership of yr own art consumption back in yr own hands
