i had a huge king phase in middle/high school and out of all of them i remember this being the most vividly bleak and horrifying. i really need to reread it to see if it holds up. i was so stunned to learn it was the first book he ever wrote

i knowโ€ฆ the worst guy you ever met had half this book stuffed in his messenger bag and made out like he was a genious for reading what seems like the longest book of all time. fuck that guy. itโ€™s genuinely a good read. take it slow, dont feel pressured to get through it quickly. thereโ€˜s enough bouncing around from character to character that it doesnโ€™t stagnate. i read it on several 5 hour plane rides over ~2 years and have had a tender place in my heart for it ever since. itโ€™s also afaik the place where my Capitalizing for Emphasis comes from. reading it now is extra neat bc of how many little things dfw got right about the future. did i say neat i meant scary

I recently got my first mechanical watch, a Hamilton re-issue of a 1970โ€™s British Air Force style (look into vintage W10 watches - really interesting/cool think of this as a rec within a rec), and I immediately wanted to dive into classic war books. I was laying in bed trying to find something that was available on audible (so much less time to read post-baby) and I landed on this classic. This is one of those high school curriculum books that a lot of people have โ€œreadโ€ but most of them havenโ€™t really read it. This book is an anti-war book without being an in-your-face anti-war book. Written by a German soldier from WWI, about German soldiers in WWI, itโ€™s real and HARSH. The contrast of what these young teens expected when enlisting (heroism, glory!) to what they really experience (disease, death, trench foot) is shocking and ultimately very sad. All Quiet on the Western Front is a heavy read but so worth it, itโ€™s a classic for a reason.
