I’m usually a more general contemporary fiction kinda gal, but the plots of horror author Gretchen Felker-Martin’s books just reel me in. Her first, Manhunt, is set in a post-apocalyptic world where anyone with high testosterone becomes a rabid mutant. The two main characters are badass trans women who have to harvest the estrogen in the mutants’ testicles to try and survive! I’m currently reading her latest, Cuckoo, set in a gay conversion therapy camp in the desert, where unknown creepy crawlies roam in the night, OooOoo.

i loved this book, it’s so bizarre.
boy parts by eliza clark, swamplandia! by karen russell, outlawed by anna north, and any comics by julia gfrörer. some of those maybe not so nasty, per se, but definitely interesting and strange portrayals of girlhood/young womanhood.
also seconding anything gillian flynn, joyce carol oates, or shirley jackson.

A grotesque and brilliant collection of short stories. a good mix of sci-fi, spec fic, body horror and comedy. Clarke’s writing feels so visceral, she manages to make such surreal worlds feel very real.

My favourite short stories tend to be creepy or magical. I think due to the necessary open-endedness of short stories, it lends itself most to mystery and magic.
Angela Carter’s Bloody Chamber is a great classic creepy feminist story to start with. Carmen Maria Machado’s The Husband Stitch continued Carter’s legacy I’m a HUGE Kelly Link fan, but her stuff is very strange so might not be for everyone, but my favourite of hers is probably The Specialist’s hat or Skinder’s Veil Shirley Jackson‘s The Lottery is also a classic, and if you like creepy stories and want a good overview of writers in that genre, I recommend the collection “When Things Get Dark”, a collection inspired by the tone of Jackson’s work; it features Kelly link, Carmen Maria Machado, Joyce Carol Oates, and loads of contemporary short story writers. I discovered the story Tiptoe by Laird Barron through this and its possibly my favourite creepy short story, it sent full shivers down my spine in a way no other story had.

One of Brooklyn's best drag shows, co-hosted by the hilarious iconic duo Qhrist Almighty and Sherry Poppins. They frequently switch up performers and let newbies have a go too, which always makes for a really exciting, dynamic experience. I once saw a drag queen called Baby get her ass tattooed live onstage there <3

A British TV show wherein 5 comedians per season complete oddball tasks set by the show’s hosts, comedian Greg Davies and his sidekick Little Alex Horne, who is mastermind of the whole shebang. It takes a bit of effort to get into it, but once you do, nothing will ever seem funnier. There are technically points awarded and winners and stuff, but it’s really all an exercise in glorious absurdity.

This fancy scent makes me smell like a sweaty adolescent boy who has rolled around in the grass all day -- in a good way! Fun to wear to the rave. The bottle is a looker, too.
