"She will carry our memories into the future." My favorite anime of last year (and maybe of all time??) Frieren: Beyond Journey's End takes several story tropes and subverts each one. The story begins after the heroes have defeated the evil demon king. The anime centers around Frieren (an immortal elven mage) traveling the world and visiting her cherished friends as they continue to age, all while training her apprentice, a human mage named Fern. I've never related to a main character moreāshort and soft spoken with a monotone voice, responding to strangers questions with blunt straightforward answers, and a love for sleeping in. Watching Frieren grow to understand the value of friendships, and how to express that care and appreciation to those friends, was what kept me hooked early on. The other main party members, Fern and Stark, initially appear to be anime character stereotypes (quick-tempered girl and shÅnen-hero boy). Thankfully, those assumptions quickly dissolve as you watch the group interact with one another and showcase more depth as they travel together (an inherently intimate experience IRL, let alone in a fantastical world). The worldbuilding is meticulously simpleāthe rules of magic are easy understand and the political landscape of the post-demon king world is easy to follow. The plot never feels overcomplicated even as the lore expands. Simultaneously heartwarming and heart wrenching, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End has only left me more wanting more ~
frieren is seriously my favourite ever. itās so rare to find an anime where it feels like the creators respect the audienceās ability to understand their story and intentions without inserting needless dramatization. and thereās a kind of gratitude and acceptance that lies at the core of the show that feels so refreshing
a manga (comics or graphic novels originating from japan) written by kanehito yamada and illustrated by tsukasa abe that was recently adapted into a 28 episode tv series. it is a love letter to the genre, its take on fantasy a breath of fresh air in the oversaturated isekai market of japan and the grim tales of the west due to its focus on slice of life. unlike the usual plot where we follow a heroās party on their journey, frieren starts off with the elven mage and her companions returning to the capital after defeating the demon king. years of mindlessness traveling pass and she embarks on another adventure to reach the resting place of souls in order to reunite with her former comrade himmel. I canāt recommend this series enough ^^ itās still ongoing so youāll have a lot of content to keep yourself busy with!!
Currently airing anime that Iām enjoying immensely. Itās so lovely and chill and vibey yet compelling and sentimental. And just really recognizes how getting to know other people and getting close/deepening those friendships/relationships and recognizing how that changes you is such a core part of being alive with the time you have left. WATCH IT!!!!
