Keep creating in silence. Become delusional with your own self talk. Make your work only for you and then bring it to the world with your voice, not the words you‘ve heard others say about your work. It’s tough but necessary if you are serious about becoming the poet, artist, writer you truly are.

This may not at all fit your particular situation. Are you employed? A freelancer? Something else? Do you have a boss or clients? Those are all factors to consider. One path forward is to reframe to make your labor the reward: the work that you do, not the feedback or recognition from others, is where you draw your satisfaction. Disconnect any sense of self-worth from the work that you do. When your work is not appreciated, that has no bearing on your value and identity. You are not what others say or don't say about your work. Consider creating things for yourself only. (In addition to the things created in the work and income and project space.) Develop the practice using your gifts to delight yourself, you'll become less needful and attached to feedback from others.

I think a big hurdle with creative stuff (especially in the age of social media) is the pressure to constantly create something great and to post about it. It's healthy to acknowledge that just because you're making something doesn't mean you need to commodify it or even share it publicly at all. When I was in the early stages of things, I really wasn't ready to open it up to judgement or critique. I think that would have dissuaded me from it entirely. Even accomplished artists that have made a living off of their work still have to make "bad" pieces from time to time, and it's ok to take time to find your voice and what you enjoy making. Critique groups are a valuable thing and often very positive, but if you need to incubate your ideas within your close circles for a while, do that! Also, I'm recovering from a migraine, so I don't know if any of this is coherent ✌️

When I say “work,” I don’t mean your job. I mean spiritual or artistic work whatever that may be. Whole lotta folx wanna be artists and I don’t disapprove of that. It’s good people want to be “creative” even though it’s painful and most ideas are bad. If you have the desire to be “creative” (and maybe one day, featured in this very newsletter alongside these contemporary luminaries) you must do your work every day. If you do it every day, eventually you’ll have something resembling a body of work and maybe even mastery of a craft.
