they’re one of my mother’s favorite flowers, and her house is filled with them. they require meticulous care and they only bloom once a year. she’s taken my sister and I to exhibits of Mapplethorpe’s photographs, and I developed a real love for their transient beauty. they always remind me of my mom and the type of woman I hope to one day be
i saw these freak alien epiphytes at the brooklyn botanical gardens a few months ago and have been mild to severely obsessed with orchids ever since. gonna make art with some soon!
irises have sort of been a recurrent motif in my life i guess. every spring they blossom in front of my building in our communal pots. i think they’re so lovely because their shape is quite unique. when i was little my mom also used to wear an iris perfume which i looooved (which i now got for myself). i also have tattoos of irises which i drew hihi 🤗
this summer, we’re starting yoga, we’re learning a new language (being bilingual is now the standard, you need to know at least three to be truly chic), we’re going to concerts just because the tickets were cheap, we’re going to museums (especially the weird ones), hitting up the local library to ask for new recommendations, whether it’s a surprise or based on past tastes, we’re painting, collecting and collaging, sewing and embroidering our clothes, re-learning the harmonica, playing chess with strangers online and at the café, we’re taking up tennis and pretending it’s not just because of challengers. the only way to find what brings you joy is to try.
