truly madly deeply the best part about casual biking is the joyous freedom of it all!! Don’t let the pretentious assholes convince you to drop $$$ on pedal clips or gels or a pointy helmet or RPM counter etc real recs: *a good helmet (non negotiable) *water bottle cage + water bottle OR a water vest with straw thing if you’re like me and don’t like to unhook your water bottle while riding *you can get a lil fanny pack thing that velcros onto the handlebar and turns into a real bag with longer straps when off the bike (ideal for biking to social events) *a detachable basket for farmers market goodies like flowers and sourdough bread

seriously the only form of exercise I look forward to. feels more like exploring and enjoying the weather/scenery, gets you more in tune with the city, and suddenly it’s been an hour and you've gone 20 miles. you dont need to break the bank and get a top of the line micro-carbon-fiber italian roadbike that weighs half an ounce or anything either, plenty of used bikes are at shops or on facebook marketplace for a good price. all cardio and NONE of the joint pain, my hips are gonna love me in my 50s and runners stay mad about it

The air smells great and the views are beautiful. Doesn’t matter whether it’s a perfect sunny day or really overcast. Do It on your own or with friends or as a date. Stop at cool shops/places along the way. Some people like to go fast but I prefer to go kinda slow and take everything in. you’ll definitely need a nice beverage in your cup holder like a coffee or a kombucha. My European friend really recommends drinking radlers, which are like lagers mixed with lemonade.

i will always wear a helmet bc i’m scared of my brain juice being splattered on asphalt. i will wear my little vest bc i refuse to be cold. i will wear my $9 target leggings bc they don’t get stuck in the spokes. i will thrive.

at least casually. don’t delete the accounts but don’t have the apps on your phone either. rediscover your love of reading thru the magic of recognizing titles strangers are holding on the subway. become a subway reader. don’t use sound as an escape from your thoughts/feelings/surroundings. grocery shopping without headphones is actually kind of beautiful! pick up a new hobby or two or three. one of them should be something you’re not good at, and at least one should be no- or low-cost. never. stop. learning. the library, the parks and rec department, and nearby museums offer great materials already but also usually have free lectures or courses. go outside more. like, a lot more. (took this much less literally, so apologies if it’s not what you’re looking for lol — as a narcoleptic I have no tips on how to Not Sleep since Sleep is basically my job)

keeps it funky, keeps it fresh! a book for outside, a book for downstairs, a book for bed, a book for the subway, a book for the bathtub…..
