Wait Vincent no!
But seriously - the world kept on rejecting van Gogh but he just kept painting. Think of yourself as a misunderstood genius and keep doing what you are passionate about. Eventually it'll all fall into place 🌻

He has a special place in my heart. Looking at his paintings is like looking at a reflection of what I feel — what I‘ve felt during my worst moments. There’s this chaos in the world, this lack of uncertainty, like the roaring storm in Vincent‘s final painting. Only recently have I taken the time to learn more about him and his story. There’s this moment where you truly realize that all those famous painters, artists, writers, Hollywood stars, actors… they’re all just like you. Human. And of course you’ve always known that they are — but you’ve never placed much thought in it. I think I’ve found some sense of unity in seeing my emotions reflected on paintings and books over a hundred years old. And it all started with Vincent. I wonder how things would have changed if he knew how much his paintings would inspire others. Learning about his story really sparked my passion for learning once more :] So I‘m very thankful to him, and to the kind old man that sold me a book about him for only three bucks.

I sometimes tell this to the architecture students I work with. I believe that most great artists are sorta insane in that they allow themselves to become fully obsessed with an idea and have it take over their brain. Like Kusama putting dots on everything. Basically, submit yourself fully to an idea and iterate on it endlessly. Learn from it. Let it take you somewhere beautiful

This is especially important if you are an artist or aspiring artist but it’s also just a good way to enjoy life and avoid getting hurt. Where it is true that our culture privileges youth and beauty and instant gratification, it is more true that meaningful, well-made and carefully considered art (and decisions) eventually rise to the top. But to make something well and carefully, one must be patient. This can mean putting the project, question or concern away for a while to return to it with fresh eyes. Or finding a group of like-minded individuals you can trust to give you honest feedback. Whatever your path to patience just remember that when all is said and done, it’s better to produce work or life choices that you know, without a shadow of a doubt, reflect your personal best, rather than rush and regret it later.

In 2024 I made it my mission to try every almond croissant I could find in my city and make a power ranking. Not only did I get to eat so many almond croissants (huge W for me) it also gave me a reason to leave my house on boring days, I discovered many new cool cafés and bakeries, and I made friends talking about my quest for croissants!
For 2025 I gladly pass on my quest to you, god speed soldier!
