What a lovely little shadowbox of a film. The plot concerns a quiet man, Hirayama, who works as a public toilet cleaner in Tokyo's Shibuya ward. And his highly structured, routinized way of living both on the job as well as his leisure time pursuits (his passion for music, played mostly on vintage cassettes in his van throughout the movie; nature photography done the old-fashioned analog way; and reading the works of authors such as Faulkner and Aya Koda). There are some scenes that are highly reminiscent of the way that Sofia Coppola depicted Tokyo in "Lost in Translation" - dreamy, impressionistic, focused on images of beauty and human emotion vs. script that "moves the plot along."  Tokyo is one of my favorite places in the world and it's reminding me I need to get back there soon.  PS: Uncle Lou Reed would have been very proud of this film had he lived to see it.  PPS: Boy is Koji Yakusho amazing in the lead role. No wonder he won best actor at Cannes last year for this performance.

I’ve been very slowly making my way through the satoshi kon filmography (like very slowly,,, I first watched perfect blue three years ago) and honestly this one might be my favorite?? a found family film through and through, which I am a gigantic sucker for. three homeless people find a baby in a dumpster and set out on a quest to find her parents, no matter the result. I think I was more receptive to it because it takes place on christmas eve and I was already feeling fresh nostalgia for a christmas eve that had just happened a few days before… but I loved being in the world this film builds. a gross, hidden tokyo built upon the backs of small kindnesses. will absolutely watch again next year because I haven’t stopped thinking about it, wanting to return to that world for a few minutes.

I always get teary-eyed when I watch this film. Recommend going into it blind. It is made by the legendary Akira Kurosawa. Amazing melodrama.

go to community-focused galleries/film festivals/poetry readings/etc in your area and see what people are doing you'll meet other like-minded people, you'll be inspired but less intimidated bc you met the real human person behind the work, or you'll see some stuff you think is really shitty and you'll be inspired to prove yourself by making something better it's all a win-win AND you'll be supporting local artists
