One of my pals just gave me a call asking me to give him a lift to the auto service shop to pick up his fixed car. Always nice to see a good friend and catch up for like 10 minutes, and he was really sweet and appreciative Feels good y'all, helping each other out and all that

i am just one person and while i can stay engaged and up to date, i can't solve all the horrors of this world. however, i can help my neighbor. i can do harm reduction. i can share what i have and if i don't have what you're looking for i probably know someone who does. mutual aid is satisfying like a community care jigsaw puzzle. it reminds me that the small connections matter and that there are caring people everywhere, often right down the street. and i've accidentally made lifelong friends in the process.

Ornithomancy is the practice of reading omens from the actions of birds — the first bird you notice on New Years Day is an omen for the year ahead of you.
The first day of 2023 I saw a heron fly above the sea I was swimming in; 2024 a cormorant from my window in the bay; 2025 it was two starlings, together on a lamppost. I’ve spent some time this morning researching starling symbolism and seeing what resonates. Communication, cooperation, group dynamics, mimicry, shape shifting... we’ll see!
I thought about my heron and my cormorant a lot throughout the year they marked, their little gift of googled symbolism. You don’t have to believe any of it, but it’s a nice bit of introspection to start your year off.
