Spending the💰guilts me into getting through them. It’s nice to get something fun in the mail and support writers. I subscribe to The Baffler and The Drift and The New York Review of Books refuses to stop coming to my house. Would love to learn what other folks are subscribing to but I will say that I personally think the New Yorker allows articles to go on for too long.

Nothing feels as good as unsubscribing, but you’re gonna want to hold on to a physical subscription or two, if for no other reason then ambiance. Personally, I recommend American Affairs and The New Criterion, a couple of quality periodicals with good aesthetics that some may call “fascist,” but I call respectable. Reading magazines will help you improve your attention span and cut through the wasteland of takes. God knows we could all use some of that.

I have always wanted to be the “kind of adult who reads The New Yorker”. I’ve signed up for and canceled the subscription multiple times over a decade, feeling guilty as the unread magazines stack up on my coffee table. But here I am, in my mid-30s, actually reading the long-form articles because I’ve replaced scrolling with reading about The Knot scamming bridal businesses and deep sea treasure hunting. It’s no stretch to say I get a lot of my information and quest for curiosity from reading this mag in digital form. And if you don’t want to splurge for a subscription, you can access the magazine digitally through your library and the Libby app. Join me in living out your aspirations!

A subscription I end up keeping because I’ll always end up reading all of their various publications (Vulture, the Cut, Gub Street). My parents kept a subscription and I’ve read it forever. I’m not local to New York but something about it feels chic, metropolitan. I bought a sweatshirt they had during a subscriber sale almost solely because it felt like something Carrie Bradshaw would have.

Harpo is very sweet and loves all people but is very particular about dogs and always wants to be the center of attention. He listens perfectly if treats are involved but otherwise is not very interested in what we want. He was found wandering the streets of Bakersfield (we decided he was too small to be named Buck) and now he is a bougie Silver Lake pup and has his own set of friends and admirers in the neighborhood. Laemmle was found crying in a hole all alone on a cold and rainy night Just outside of LA’s Chinatown. When she was a baby she was a demon about any food, especially butter, but now she is perfect and sweet and loves to sit in your lap in purr. She kills and eats bugs so we never have to worry about them. (Lem-lee)

This is annoying advice but love has always come to me when I’m not looking for it. When I get very active in things I’m passionate about (usually leftie organizing but also art and history stuff and also just spending time with friends a la the friends of friends rec) I meet new people and find interesting, aligned folks.
