my brother gave me burned copies of all their albums for my 16th birthday in December 2008. i started listening in earnest one week in the following spring and immediately fell in love. that same week, my dad took me and my friend to see Foo Fighters at the Key Arena. we got up to get a snack and i hear the muffled sounds of the opener working their way through the hall when it hit me: it was Minus the Bear and they were playing the intro to Knights. my friend and i did a 180 and ran back to our seats to see them play. just a great memory. (linked vid is from around the same time but a different show)

i saw ink at a big venue, but my friend and i were really close to the stage and got to sing our hearts out and jump around and dance, and it was amazing. the psychedelic furs were at pappy and harriet’s, a much smaller outdoor venue, and i went with my mum. we stood near the back and sang and absorbed the music, and it was also amazing.

It was mere months before "Nevermind" would change the entire pop universe, sweeping away the hair bands, the bullshit, the last vestigial remnants of the 80s that came before like so many tumbleweeds. THE SETLIST OMG: Aneurysm, Breed, Love Buzz, In Bloom, Stay Away, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, On a Plain, Sliver, I think Polly was the encore if I remember right (it was a long time ago).  Satyricon was a shitty, dumpy, dark little club (the CBGB of Portland basically) with smoke crusted ceilings and a permanent bad smell, I think it might have held 400 sweaty bodies, max? The venue handed out free bottles of champagne to celebrate new year and during the opening sets, a bunch of bottles had been thrown against the wall and broke -- Krist Novoselic came out onstage, swept away the glass, and played barefoot as he always did.  The year punk broke. It went mainstream. All my favorite noise/sounds were now headed to MTV and the radio and our little lives changed forever that night. (Supposedly Kurt met Courtney there so his did too, ha).

in 2014 at the church my parents got married in. Beautiful seated show in pews, surrounded by stained glass, visuals were circular projections of ink being dropped into milk. Danny Brown in 2013 at a tiny college gymnasium. My parents wouldn’t let me go to the after party. My mom almost didn’t let me go to the show after she listened to XXX and said to me verbatim one Sunday morning before church: “Have you listened to the lyrics?! ‘My dick so big it left stretch marks on her jaw?!?’” Death Grips in 2015, got punched in the head so hard (by accident) in the pit that I threw up then stayed the night at my friends house in Baltimore before driving 6 hours through rural Pennsylvania the next day to be a counselor at church camp. Mitski in a small basement venue in 2016 on the night of a comet shower. The first show my husband and I saw together but I had a very unfortunate stomachache, thankfully I could sit down. Alex G and Porches in 2016 at my favorite now-closed venue. My husband asked him to play “Mis” but he said he didn’t really remember it, thankfully the bassist remembered it so they did and it was lovely. LVL UP at their final tour in 2018 at another small bar venue. Husband requested “Big Snow” and boy did it rip, spicy hot gumbo! Honorable mention to Sleater Kinney in 2014 because Lizzo opened from them and she threw me a packet of Famous Amos cookies which is just a funny story to retell today and to think about her opening for Sleater Kinney at one point. Can’t really pick between them, this is mostly a note to self to remind me of some of my favorite live music experiences. 2010’s was a truly great concert era for me.

Haven’t updated this in a long time. Only one that’s fallen in favor for me is Ex Machina. It also feels weird to have my boy Ethan Hawke represented twice but whattya gonna do.
