pure poetry autobiography written by the painter marc chagall who was a cancer man like me. his description of his mother practically made me cry for the first time in months. also lots of bitchy ranting about trends in art in his day. some favorite lines: ā€œBut my art, I thought, is perhaps a wild art, a blazing quicksilver, a blue soul flashing on my canvasesā€ p 110 and ā€œI didn’t hesitate to darken my eyes a little, to redden my lips lightly, though there was no need for it and yes, yes… I wanted to please those girls on the river sideā€ p 69 ok it’s actually hard to pull single lines from this thing bc the long form is so good. just get the damn book it was like $6 shipped on abe books or whatever and it has prints of etchings he made specifically for the project. a real page turner u could finish in one sitting easily

it's riveting and funny and horny and existential and incredibly easy to read - like drinking water - no confusion, no idea where it's heading. thrilling perfect book.

I went to Miami for Art Basel and by the end of the weekend I was filled with hangxiety so I spent an extra day sitting on the beach reading Stephanie LaCava’s newish novel I Fear My Pain Interests You. It’s about the daughter of two punk rock stars who suffers from ā€œcongenital analgesia,ā€ which means she feels no physical pain, and though it’s definitely not a breezy beach read, it destroyed me, in a good way.

all you need is like 1-2 pages of text on paper, sometimes less. works every time. i used to swear by fiction but lately i’ve been reading a lot of ā€œhard booksā€ for example Concerning the spiritual in art by wassily kandinsky and Memories dreams reflections by carl jung and i think these work even better for sleepiness in the way they make me feel too stupid to be awake. blue light from the phone/laptop etc will kill you
