If you need a platform that isn't addictive and DOESN'T feel like a cesspool, I suggest Bluesky (bsky.app). It's like what Twitter used to be, except it's not algorithmic based-- You have MUCH more control over the people and topics that show up in your feed. there's also "starter packs" that basically let you mass-follow topics or related users you're interested in. It's a breath of fresh air tbh and a lot less of an echo chamber

I don't know. I've been enjoying it, but it's kind of just Diet Twitter in the sense that I should probably not be consuming it at all (for my mental health). Friends and I have been talking about going full into wheat-pasting posters around for shows and just getting on email lists. The mask has come off for a lot of these platforms, and there was a time not so long ago where they weren't part of our daily lives. It probably wouldn't be that hard to rip the collective band aid off.

i have already left one HELL of a digital footprint, but I'd like to make that a little cleaner, a little freer. So, I'm gonna be looking for a new search engine (ecosia is a scam unfortunately and duckduckgo is kinda for creeps imho, but im trying), new email service, gonna quit using google Docs to write. Deactivating FB and Instagram soon, but need my friends and family to join the mass migration / go-dark-ification. I was never a Twitter liker but I did make a Bluesky. Now that they've dropped Pinksky, their instagram clone, why tf not just say bye to the fucked AI bots and algorithmic censorship? Idk maybe I won't even use bsky/psky as much as I did Meta before, but either way, this social media shit has been exhausting for years and I just wanna experience life outside a screen again. Maybe show what I enjoyed/created on the screen later sometimes.

Concentrate on accounts you follow, and expect to run out of things to look at. Avoid “for you” and “suggested posts/videos” - when you’re out of Following posts, you’re done :) People have said the internet is full of horrors, and I know that’s true, but I haven’t experienced it. That’s not to brag, just to show it’s possible! And I have spent my time on Tumblr, Reddit, pre-Musk Twitter, YouTube, instagram. Link goes to a post with specific advice for IG and YouTube. I don’t think Twitter can be used this way anymore, and you will have junk shoved into your feed no matter what. Maybe start fresh with new accounts to reset everything, too

It shows a long life and the many smiles you've given and experienced!! It's a permanent remembrance of happiness and I think that's beautiful!!

My steps: 1. Shut my phone down, hide it in my room, and lock the door so it's a pain in the ass to get to. 2. Be bored, and sit in the boredom for like 7-10 minutes (MINIMUM)-- once you're bored see what your brain gravitates to beyond The Screen (is it doodling? is it playing guitar? is it writing?) 3. Find the little thing your brain latches on to, and start doing it! Even if it's something goofy like "Just Dance youtube videos" to dance to LOL this is you, deliberately following your brain's natural curiosity & interest And then rinse and repeat however you like <3 Once you get accustomed to the smaller, more gratifying feel good activities, social media starts to feel too overwhelming to even pick back up again-- you'll be reaching for it less and less (a final aside: I am of the major belief that creativity & imagination is critical to creating a better reality to live in, because it shows that you're capable of leaning into what "doesn't exist", and are courageous enough to imagine and build a reality that defies the status quo. but that's just me LOL)
