claraoscura omg of course!! i'll add a couple of standout items from each as well in case you've never tried anything from them out before so you can get an idea of where to start maybe hehe :) i love kokuyo, pentel, zebra, uni and tombow the most!! a few of them obvs have items in the market all over the world, but the japanese exclusive stuff goes crazyyy - for kokuyo i like the pasta crayon things which are like high end crayons lol.. they're work really nice and they feel a lot nicer to use than your average crayon!! kokuyo are great for innovation honestly they have all sorts of things you never knew you needed - washi tape cutters, erasers with loads of angles for precision and such, highlighters with two sides, each being a different colour.. they're really fab for fun stuff that could seem like a gimmick but they work super nice :) their pencil cases are also amazing, they have tons of different kinds that all have some sort of advantage to using them (they also have the campus notebooks and smart ring binders which i have been wanting to try for years) - pentel have most of their stuff available everywhere so admittedly this could be considered just a stationery pick but the pentel energel in 0.5 is probably the best gel pen i've ever used.. and their mattehop coloured gel pens dry matte and they're super bold colours and they're really thick pens so they look so fun if you're writing a birthday card or drawing something cute - zebra ofc have the mildliners that everyone loves but i like their clickart felt tip pens as well!! convenient and elevate the experience a bit. the actual pen is kinda nothing special but they have a real nice range of colours. their sarasa gel pens are alright too, but i find cause the nibs are thin they're kinda scratchy (same goes for pilot juice pens but i think they're a bit nicer... imo) for me their best offering is the zebra blen pen which is a weird ballpoint/gel hybrid thing and it is really nice to hold and it never skips. it's fabulous - uni has the uniball one range which has probably one of the best ranges of colours for gel pens that i've seen and if you get the thicker ones they're perfect. they also do the unistyle fit something or other which is a multipen that you can put all the colours and refills in that you like the most which i think is genius (a couple of these other brands do these too, you can try out which ink formula you like the most and then go from there!!! it's so cool blew my mind when i first heard about them.. you can even add in a mechanical pencil.....) - tombow make brush pens which are lovely but i really like their sign pen which is a lot more resistand when writing/drawing but you get some really nice control over line weight when you use it! gives a lil comic book look to everything as well which is nice. zebra also make a really nice sign pen. i can't remember which one i prefer .. because they look terribly similar and i have both hahaha ! regardless, they're both alike and both very nice. their famous coloured brush pens are definitely worth a try too but they're a lot harder to work with imo they also have the mono mechanical pencil which i swear by, and i was never much of a mechanical pencil girl!! you can replace the eraser and i don't know what it is about it.. it's just fab. and they do fun colours and some sanrio stuff too which is too cute there's also classics like copic or holbein on the more arty side of things which are both incredibly legendary brands as well :) copic have just come out with some acrylic paint pens which i really want to try out! they also have glitter pens called spica which add some nice pizzazz to everything :') and holbein make some of the best gouache out there if you're into painting sorry this was stupidly long hahaha, i hope it can help you get into this stuff a bit!! it's such fun when you start trying it all out lol -- i would also recommend trying the premade packs tokyo pen shop have, they have a bunch of them and they're really well curated! :)

Always go Japanese for pens. or go to the stationary store in Greenwich Village. Hard to gauge, if you’re doing alot of writing then you probably want to lean away from fountain pens which are considered “fancy.”

Erasable ink pen from Japan. writes super smooth and precise. literally has a little friction nub eraser that's just like a pencil. i also bought a new daily planner while in Tokyo, and so I keep finding excuses to write more with this pen. highly recommend!!
