Black swallowtail butterfly

We found a bunch of the caterpillars on our parsley and raised them inside thinking they were monarchs. Turns out these are WAY COOLER!

Woolly Bear Caterpillar

Fluffy Armor: It has a dense coat of soft, bristly hairs that serve as protection from predators. Winter Predictor: These caterpillars are famous for their "winter forecasting." According to folklore, the size of the orange-brown middle band indicates how harsh the upcoming winter will be—more orange means a milder winter, while more black suggests a harsh one! (I always call when it’s going to snow) Voracious Eater: Despite their cute, fluffy appearance, they are very hungry little creatures. They feast on a variety of plants, especially dandelions, clovers, and grasses, as they grow into their full size. (I have insatiable hunger..it is a problem) Moth Transformation: After spending the winter as a cocoon, the Woolly Bear turns into an Isabella Tiger Moth, which has subtle but beautiful patterns on its wings. (Me in my 20s duh)
