Coming to this comment section for catharsis after finally watching it today ā¹ļøAs a sex worker/former fs sex worker Iām honestly disgusted that people are calling this a humanist portrayal. Aniās humanity (outside of her willingness to defend herself) isnāt explored at all, and the idea that the break in/assault scene has been described by professional reviewers as a āhilarious slapstick crescendoā makes me want to vom. Sean Baker needs to sit down. If heās so fixated on us (or as he would probably say: āpassionate about telling the stories of sex workersā) maybe he should just fund art made by actual sex workers.
Some nice cinematography, but James Gray's Two Lovers was way more true to the class tensions of Brighton Beach despite starring frickin' Gwyneth Paltrow
I was :/ i expected it to balance the plotās mad, trashy, hyperreal, hilarious odyssey through the city with a deep emotional core in the way that Tangerine does, but Anora is soooo surface level in comparison - the characters are so hastily sketched in comparison to his other films, it feels more like a comedy/thriller rather than a drama.
