You see Scorsese’s opening shots of the sold-out audience being served turkey and all the trimmings at a sit-down dinner in SF’s Winterland Ballroom, pre show Then you see Uncle Neil Young playing songs with a cocaine rock visible in his nostril And you give thanks 🙏🏻 https://www.thecut.com/2021/01/i-think-about-this-legendary-neil-young-story-a-lot.html

While I'm on the topic of the CSNY boys, I have to shout out my favorite later Neil Young record, Sleeps with Angels. I'm more of a Neil Young fan than I have any right to be. I think it's cool that he is considered the godfather of grunge. It isn't just about his early work with Crazy Horse on Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, though those guitars do feel very grimy. It's a genuine feeling he cultivated on After The Gold Rush, after the hazy, marijuana Laurel Canyon fever dream ended- this question of, where do I go from here? It's a feeling he continued to noodle with on "On The Beach" a couple of albums later on, confronting his love hate relationship with fame, his audience, and that good old artist question of "what the hell do I have to say that make these people like me!" (I went to the radio interview/But I ended up alone at the microphone). Abridging the history is hard with Neil, but for brevity's sake- here we are, '94. This album is directly influenced by the death of Kurt Cobain, who referenced Neil by name in his suicide note, striking a chord with the aging rocker. Sleeps with Angels is a reaction to grunge while also being steeped in it, but there are no distorted guitars. There's a wistful, dreamlike atmosphere. It's pretty heavy despite it all. I also think the cover is amazing. Fav tracks: Driveby, Change Your Mind (15 minute rocker!!), Safeway Cart, Blue Eden. I hope you enjoy.

The man responsible for dozens of Teenage Symphonies to God "Sad songs about happy things" (the first time, as a kid, I can recall the sweet/sour combo of melodies that could make you cry attached to songs about endless, bottomless love) I've long since lost track of how many weddings and funerals I've attended that have featured this song; suffice it to say, "a lot." God only knows what we'd been without him 🙏🏻

Hey tyler hopefully this doesn’t violate some PI.FYI golden rule But after nearly two years of writing, editing and arguing, my book about the EP is coming out in May and can be preordered here: https://hozacrecords.com/product/aifl/ The book is about the origins, history and cultural impact of the EP since these little objects first started coming out in the 50s. Over 50 of my music biz friends then helped me shape the list and review the top 200 ever released, according to us (ha). For those of you who are into this kind of geekery/snobbery, I can’t wait to hear what you think. A labor of love, as all books are! ❤️
