I was reminded of this book recently while watching Chappell Roan's Tiny Desk concert. It may be outdated now, but the gist is current. Pop music is the best.

There aren’t many bands or songs out there you can point to and say “this changed my life” but this band and song did.
It contains one of the dirtiest guitar licks ever recorded, an earworm of melody and noise.
They helped me discover the Velvet Underground 🍌(and kick-started the so-called Paisley Underground movement that gave birth to the Bangles among others).
My band could even play this song and it sounded BOSS (not every cover did, ha). So simple anyone could play it; but only THEY could write it.

this is one of the most famous songs ever, so excuse my obvious-posting. And being late to the game. This is actually the song that got me into VU this past year. Sure, “Venus In Furs” is pretty sexy and grimy. I was shocked that the same band that made that song made this song. Gave me pause!
if I have kids this will be my lullaby for them. I sing it to my cat while she’s falling asleep- “sadie says/ that im really sleepy/ and a little hungry too”.
I can’t get over how beautifully observed the lyrics are. Each verse really cuts into something so human… “I hate the quiet places/the cut the smallest taste/of what will be”. Felt. That.

This recent music video for "Juna" by Clairo (another favorite) reminded me how great and criminally underutilized the mouth trumpet is. I'd pay to see her and Stephen Colbert have a mouth trumpet-off.

My car speakers are one of my most trusted companions. So I spend a lot of time driving because it's where I listen back to the music I'm making. A package of BCSPTs left in the passenger seat the evening before a warm summer morning drive is my hottest hot tip. If you haven't done this, you should do this.
