I usually get very shy and nervous to say hi to people I run into that I know. My go-to move is to ignore people and pretend I didn’t see them. I just ran into people I went to college with and it was a little awkward. However I’m proud of myself for saying hello and being excited. I was happy to see them and I’m glad to see a positive change in myself and how I interact with people.

Even if it's not received well. I spent most of my life feeling awkward around other people (and still sometimes do) but I love chatting it up with a stranger. Giving a compliment, cracking a joke. An internet acquaintance is in Boston? Let's go get a drink! Making friends this way proves something to a younger, more shy version of myself. Smiled and said hello to Bimh who works at the post office earlier because last week we had a nice conversation.

I've been on a real journey lately. You see the person across the room and you know them... and you know they know you... but you know that they aren't going to come over and say hi... do it. Take the plunge. However the approach needs to happen, make contact. Don't wait until you see them at the next networking event and say "hey were you at the taco place the other day?" It's surprisingly empowering and frankly kind of an impressive social maneuver. The reward is giddy and powerful and immediate. It makes me feel like I've broken out of the matrix.

I used to be a serious hater and socially anxious. Now I can smile at strangers or make friendly small talk in an elevator and i feel so much happier. Took me 33 years but new skill unlocked?
