This weekend, after some pestering, my local cinema / arts space allowed me to screen + introduce Gremlins 2 (my favourite film of all time) due to its links to an exhibition I’ve been working on in their gallery about breaking the fourth wall. I’ve only ever seen the film on my tv, so it was incredible to see it on the big screen — the storyline works so much better in a cinema and it looked GREAT. Gizmo is so fucking cute. It did also feel like when you show your friend a Funny Video and get nervous about whether or not they’re enjoying it, but on steroids. Every time anyone in the audience laughed I felt so validated — looking around thinking yes… YES… this is the best film to exist, and these strangers… they are my people. I was cackling throughout, the kind of laughter that leaves your cheeks aching afterwards. Everyone clapped during the credits and it sounds like a meme but it’s true. Sometimes being an artist is alright.

If you’re lucky enough to have a cinema nearby that shows certain films on actual film stock then I can’t recommend it enough. All of the mistakes and signs of use on the film stock, that are apparent to you throughout the runtime, adds another layer of immersion to a cinema experience. No one else will see that particular showing of that particular film except for the people in that room with you at the time. One of my old drama school teachers once told me a fun little story about the gaps between each frame. He said that all those empty gaps which are only fractions of a second between frames being processed and projected are all registered in our brains when we watch a film on celluloid. He also said that our brains see these blank spaces and instinctively imagines what would fill the empty gaps so, we feel more immersed in the film as our brains try to connect these dots in front of us. I don’t know if that’s true at all, but I’d like to believe so.

I put it off bc I didn't wanna cry in front of strangers for 90 minutes but I'm so glad I did 😭 I'm so sure it was like the FINAL showing at my local cinema and I'm really, really glad I went <3

A bit of a basic answer, but seeing this and laughing and crying at the same time as everyone else in the room while the music swelled and the colors flashed at my childhood AMC was one of the best moviegoing experiences I’ve ever had! Wish i could relive that first time!!
