I’m so over how laptops and phones work well for a bit and then all of a sudden start getting slow and breaking down!! What 😳no haha you’re so expensive and supposed to be a wonder of human innovation why aren’t you made to last…
What if all the things we bought followed the pattern that tech items do, we’d go crazy. What if you could only have an oven or an iron or a radio or a car for couple years and then it starts irreversibly deteriorating and you can’t get the same one again you have to replace it with a bigger, very self-consciously ‘streamlined’ thing that claims to be the best but will also not last so long too…. Madness

this. thisssss. my laptop, that i adore, is an 11-inch 2014 macbook air. it does great things for me, as i don't do much with it outside of basic web browsing. i can't even bring myself to happily use a macbook post-usb-a. i need my ports!! i need my shit to last!!! i'll never let it go. and bring back easy user upgradability! when did we decide to slow down tech and remove upgradability? the tech industry is a cash grab now, it feels like they all lost the love of the game, per se.

i miss weird phones as much as anybody but honestly i think phones are too much of a solved technology at this point. the touchscreen was the best thing to happen to software and the worst thing to happen to hardware. it also doesn't help that there are fewer manufacturers now and they have more of an incentive than ever to keep making more boring, more expensive designs with higher margins.
at least some of the new folding/bending ones are sort of cool but there's only so far they can go.

its crazy to me we are now at a point where major companies are actively putting measures into their products to make them hard or impossible to fix on your own. if you take it anywhere else to get it fixed your warranty is now voided. i just paid like $1000 for this phone. do i even really own it if nobody but the company i bought it from can fix it?
better yet you bring it to them and they will essentially do nothing but quote you for overpriced parts you don’t need or more likely just tell you to buy a new phone. thanks apple!!!

before my current phone I always bought secondhand. the only reason I got this one new was because I couldn’t afford the up front payment of a second hand phone so got a new one on contract to pay off over 3 years. Once my contract runs out I won’t be upgrading I’ll just keep this one until I run it into the ground or possibly sell it to buy a second hand one that has a less shit camera. My last iPhone I had longer than anyone thought was possible, and it was second hand to me! (iPhone SEs are almost unbreakableo swear). Ive never smashed an iPhone even after dropping it a lot (CASES PEOPLE CASES) and while I know planned obsolescence is a thing, I’ve found with phones that people use it to justify buying new ones much more than is necessary. I don’t buy any tech new if I can help it! Save the planet and save your money!

i sense the most reliable path to true contentment and fulfilment in this life may be found by focusing not on ‘what will make me happy’ but on ‘how can I be useful to those I love and my community’.... the two are by no means mutually exclusive and i believe the first can only ever be found through the second.
