some of these I regularly follow(*) and others are on my to-listen list:
Not Overthinking, Sociology Ruins Everything*, No Stupid Questions*, Goes Without Saying, Binchtopia!
- hope u like em :)
Some I like are more produced and less indie but they're still more than people just sitting around and yapping about whatever people online are currently arguing about, so I feel like they fit the bill!
Lateral with Tom Scott -- combo of trivia and riddles, nerdiest thing i've ever been into and that's saying something
Escape This Podcast -- second nerdiest thing i've ever been into, listening to people do a table top game (think D&D) and their goal is to accomplish an escape room
Weirdest Thing I Learned This Week -- bunch of short science stories
Ologies -- long form, thoughtful interviews with experts in a variety of fields, many of which are quite timely
You Are Good -- Diving into movies that are culturally well known and/or just favorites of the hosts, and getting into why those stories are compelling and what the creators of the movie are saying/trying to say with it
You're Wrong About -- Getting into things that most people think they know about but there's way more to the story and there's often a fundamental misunderstanding in how most people think of the things (stanford prison experiment, donner party, stonewall uprising, and satanic panic are classic eps I recommend to everyone)
Decoder Ring -- Answers why random pop culture things of the present or past became things in the first place
American Hysteria -- Insights into pop culture and society (sounds boring with that description but I promise it's good)
the Michael Hobbes podcast universe
-Maintenance Phase: everything all the idiots in the world say about weight or weight loss or health, deconstructed to the realities of science #methodologyqueen
-If Books Could Kill: every book the most annoying person in your life has recommended, torn apart brutally and exactly #methodologyqueen extended MH universe
-5-4: the supreme court sucks, letās talk about it and giggle
-In Bed With The Right: great convos on feminism and sexuality theory and how theyāre being used by the far right, as well as digging into historical philosophical context cyber true crime
-Darknet Diaries: interviews about wild cyber crime stories, very deep dives
-Hacked: more playful latest cyber news, easy entry point and entertaining
-ReplyAll: not just cyber crime, just everything internet. a hall of famer in the world of podcasts, has since died but if you havenāt listened iām jealous that you still get to experience it for the first time goss
-Normal Gossip: iām obsessed with other peopleās gossip esp when I donāt know a soul involved. this is the most perfectly produced way to do it, iām gasping from shock and awe anytime this is on
-Petty Crimes: because Normal Gossip is so well produced and they have gorgeous boundaries, there arenāt nearly enough episodes. this is a more coastal elite millennial take on other peopleās gossip and very silly
-Heavyweight: another gimlet studios creation that might be dead? itās like Serial but for the most mundane personal stories that makes me cry nearly every episode wildcard
-I Will Teach You To Be Rich: insane branding but stay with me, you get to listen to real couples talk about their actual finances. Ramit is surprisingly intersectional in how he views peopleās attitudes about money, you wouldnāt get the vibe from his general demeanor but itās frequently nuanced takes. his book that the podcast is named for is a tough read bc he has a very brash āguy with a podcast and internet course for sellā vibe to him but he is genuinely the only āfinancial advice guruā that I trust and listening to his more recent episodes you can tell he has a firm understanding of societal factors that lead to financial hardship. whenever iām up to date on this one I can feel myself making smarter money decisions (sorry long description I do feel like he requires a lot of prefacing lol)
