I sleep way too late and spend so much of my time groggy and butthurt about missing the morning. I want this to finally be the year where I wake up at a reasonable time (read: not 10:30am) and have hours to myself to read, stretch, and just hang before I start my work day. Because I work PST hours from New York (and live with a night owl grad student), I have no forcing function to give me any sense of discipline beyond meeting my lax work requirements. But most nights past 1am I’m many pages into Google reading the same tips to become a morning person and capitalize on the free mornings I could have with my shifted schedule.

I’ve struggled with sleep maintenance my whole adult life and have been working PST jobs from the East Coast for years now, so both naturally hopeless and lacking your standard external motivators to be conscious in the “single digits.” I actively want to change this so that I have time to myself in the morning to read/exercise/just chill since I work later into the night, but has never been something I can consistently rewrite. In any case, I have the luxury to drink coffee and read for a bit in bed before starting my work day, but wow if I master mornings I’d have hours…

I used to be such a morning person and I’m trying to get back to that. It’s much harder in the winter but I feel more encouraged by the changing of seasons. I feel such much more at peace when I have time to myself in the mornings before I need to rush to work. I can stretch, write, read, watch an episode of King of the Hill lol. The hardest part is peeling yourself out of bed, and then you‘re rewarded by time and quiet.

I've been getting over jet lag the past week. It was waking up at 5am and didn't want to dick around the apartment until it was time to go to work, so I went to a coffee shop that opened at 7 to journal a bit. It was nice. I liked taking my time. I texted some friends about it. And some of them showed up the next morning? And the next morning? And regular early morning coffee before work is just a thing we do now? It seems like the choice has been made for me that I have to change my sleep schedule to accommodate this now that I'm back on this timezone. Seeing my friends faces, chatting, and working on our little tasks together first thing in the morning is just too sweet.

I probably have to pop that cherry today for work and I’m deeply sad since I’ve gotten this far with never once using it, which is the way things should be.
