I’ve only done this twice (on Thanksgiving and Christmas) but wow what a way to wake up! Especially rewarding if you can plunge in salt water. I went to the Puget Sound on Christmas and saw a seal!
I suggest bringing a friend or two, a tarp/picnic blanket and a hot beverage as a reward. Once a coldwater skeptic, I now understand the appeal and want to be doing more of this in 2025.
Nothing is a better reset than sitting alone with the ocean. Growing up on islands gave me a love for the choppy waters that were never more than a few minutes away, and as an adult I’ve rediscovered the companionship that they provide. Sneaking to the beach on the way home from work or on a lunch break feels like getting away with something in the best way. The worse the weather and the rockier the beach, the better time you’ll have–especially if you have a warm car to retreat to.

Literally changed my whole perspective. Suddenly my world is full of possible and wonder and whimsy. I may only write in my journal right now... but I'm a writer goddamnit!
Headphones OFF. Listening to the birds and the leaves and neighbors on walks on phone calls. Journalling and jamming and eating cherries!!! For all the complicated emotions a childhood home evokes I will always relish in the privilege of a porch.
