probably the most important, game changing book i’ve ever read. should be mandatory, especially if you live in a current or former colonial state

What can I say about this that hasn’t already been said? Having grown up on Twitter and seeing first hand the rise of the right wing conspiracy theory movement, to the point the app became miserable and unusable, understanding the specifics of how this happened was fascinating and I couldn’t put it down. The chapters on Israel/Palestine and the history of the “Jewish question” was really important to read and I haven’t been able to stop discussing it with people at every opportunity. Naomi’s account of her time in Palestine, dealing with the IDF is really shocking if ultimately unsurprising. I really feel like this is one of the most essential reads of the 21st century.

an amazingly comprehensive, anti-capitalist read that tackles degrowth and ecofeminist ideals. (huge thanks to royallmonarch for bringing this read to my attention!) Saito doesn’t claim to have all the answers, but makes a case that prompts readers to think deeply about the link between the climate emergency and the preservation of the imperial core. he touches on how climate change and even some solutions for it disproportionately impact the global south, greenwashing, the feminization of poverty, the need to dissolve the current imperial mode of living and more. a must read for anyone interested in communism, the environment and feminism. i’ve always stressed nearly all social issues are interconnected, but had no idea how to formally put that into words. this book does a fantastic job of that with little academic jargon. (and so what if you have to look up a few definitions? you’re learning something!) a personal favorite line of mine comes towards the end, where climate justice is referred to as “the lever of revolution”. i hope people take the time to consider this as a read. extremely informative and enlightening 🌏

now that this is streaming on netflix i could finally show it to my partner after having raved about it for years and years now. one of my all time favourites, and one of the sexiest and most biting films of all time. set in Mexico, it centres two young men, one of whom is the son of (corrupt) government official, salivating desperately over an older woman who impulsively agrees to go on road trip with them to a beach they've made up when her life starts falling apart. it seamlessly juxtaposes their trivial concerns and petty arguments, with the working class and Indigenous peoples of Mexico. it digs into class and sexual politics, and heteronormativity, whilst somehow remaining incredibly entertaining and super erotic. also shout out to baby Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal.

There’s a beach at South West Rocks in northern NSW called Trial Bay. It is the only place in my childhood that I remember being really, genuinely happy. I haven’t been there in probably close to twenty years now but I can still taste the salt water when I would accidentally swallow it if I went into the proper surf, and the sweetness of this green apple syrup I would get on my snow cones that a random fella would sell there every summer. The sunburns I would get were insane because I would just spend all day snorkelling in the shallows. There wasn’t anything that interesting to look at but I was captivated by the idea that there was like a whole other little world under the surface of the water. Whenever I think about what being at peace would feel like for me I think about those days at that beach.

did not know about this until today. so fucking cool
It reminds me of how mubi used to be, they select one rare movie (documentaries, shorts, features new and old) per week with an essay about it. It's great if you want to build a habit of watching more movies, especially those that aren't widely known. And the best part: it's free!
