Took me 8 years and 4 schools to finish my degree, but when I finished it was because I wanted to. There is so much pressure to live life a certain way but it is ok to do things at your own pace in your own way. Life is not a checklist. I am so proud to have finished school because I did it in the most fulfilling way for me.

I love education and taking classes, but I didn’t graduate college. One day I’ll probably go back to school when I know what I want to study, but the expectation to graduate from college in the 4ish years after high school didn’t make sense for me. If it doesn’t feel right for you, do something else that does.

I took off an entire year before my first degree after high school and just took language classes for fun, and it was the best thing I could have done to settle into my undergrad degree when I eventually went. The truth is, people who discourage it tend to do so because they think you will need to play catch up but there is actually nothing to catch up to, its just arbitrary standards about what you should do and when. It will never be too late to do and become the things that you want. But when you are burnt out, and need a mental health break, especially when you have avenues to take a break, you should listen to your body and do it. How you use your gap semester is up to you, whether its getting more sleep or taking some pottery classes for fun, but I found it fulfilling to have a break where I was not just running on a hamster wheel, worrying myself sick about my miles long to do list. And I was the better for it when I went to uni afterwards, I was more focused and I had a better understanding of what I wanted out of my academic career. So yeah, do it, the refresh is more likely to help than it is to harm, just be balanced in how you use it e.g. do some hobbies now that you aren't beholden to the school schedule, don't jam pack your time away and come back tired etc

i'm in community college rn, i had a rough time in high school so i figured id do two catchup/gen ed years before finishing up my degree at a 4 year. we all know its college app season/college result season and oh my god guys i keep seeing these high schoolers shooting for 8% acceptance rate universities and not settling for anything less. like i get it, i do. but am i the only one whos seeing an uptick of kids just applying places just to say they got in ? i feel like i ask a lot of these people about what they want to do/what they're passionate about and why they're majoring in what they're majoring in and they just give me a blank stare. can we PLEASE normalize saving money and taking your time ? you have the rest of your life to work and be miserable paying taxes and pulling your weight at a 9-5. there's literally no shame in community, and I'm so sick and tired of people thinking there is. if you don't know what you want to do, you're allowed to take the time to get there. it's honestly worse to settle on a mediocre major that you don't particularly like just to get your degree faster and say you graduated on time. high school really doesn't give you the time to decide these things so once you reach adulthood it's your responsibility to allocate your time towards it. i really want to see more kids soul searching in a meaningful and responsible way. and if you know what you wanna do and you got into your 8% acceptance rate dream school, more power to you. I'm just saying that seeing a case like that is rare these days and people deserve the time to think and absorb their new responsibilities.

This past year I have become obsessed with all that our hands do. hands help, build, create, love, share. There is so much beauty in our day to day lives you just have to look for it. This is one of my favorite hand pictures I took this year. my coworker is opening a pomegranate to share with our class. I love how her hands are making a heart while she is separating the seeds.
