In times of joy, monotony, grief, or strife, I bring my focus into the home. Here, I attempt to create relief through effort and sustenance. Through rigor and control. Then, it’s nice to broaden the scope and share my space with friends; to gather, embrace community and feel warm in the presence of another.

i want to invest myself in learning how to make good food and be able to share that with others. i was thinking about how sad it is that cooking is a hobby that produces perishable work. it doesn’t last forever and eventually i will have nothing to show for what i’ve done. but i think the fact that food is fleeting reflects how nothing in life lasts and everything is always changing; we can only appreciate what we have in the present and i think food brings us back to that notion. whether it’s sharing a meal at home with ur parents or catching up with a friend over lunch or enjoying a new cafe on ur own, food is meant to bring ur mind to the current moment in that u are tasting, seeing, smelling, and interacting with the item before u. to be able to offer that to my loved ones and also share that experience with them is a privilege, even if it is short-lived.

I’m recovering from a health scare, and I’ve been outsourcing all of the ā€œessentialsā€ that I can’t maintain on my own— eating is essential, cooking is not, so I bought a massive quiche from my neighbourhood bakery and have been eating that. I’ve had to orient around what my body can do right now, and what makes my body feel safe, and that’s felt very decadent. I had a friend over for brunch and just got a ton of pastry delivered— I got quality time with a friend, and didn’t have dishes after. I’ve asked someone to come water my garden, and leaning into relationships is always really affirming; remembering that safety and wellness are group projects, and that I can call in my community, has been really good.

i have a few events this weekend where i have to bring food and i’m just having fun planning and cooking recipes i think my friends will like and looking forward to when we all get to enjoy it together
