ive only ever met one person irl thats had interest in them and it was an ex:( i didnt have interest for a long time either. then i realized its not just marvel and dc stuff.(love that too) but theres ones about witchcraft, i found one about this widely unknown female superhero who uses natures elements! vampires, a character n series about death, sex, so many. endless topics, endless media. some are 50 cents at your local shop. nobody realizes how great comic media consumption can be anymore
Give franco-belgian comics a try too! I know most recommend Moebius works but there is so much more to explore from Humanoids publishing.
Vertical publishes incredible manga from the greats.
+ Y the Last Man and Saga are great comics from Brian K Vaughn (despite his neoliberal posturing oozing from his writing)
There is a graphic novel about the founding of Mormonism which is a fantastic read sadly it’s name has slipped my mind.
I used to write comics as a kid. It was so fun, I had different comic series id draw in pencil and id be excited to give them to my friends to read. My friend wrote comics too but he had a different style than me. I had a series about zombies, it was basically a clone of the walking dead but I put my own spin on it. Drawing it was so much fun. Each comic issue I made was like 20 to 30 pages and I wrote 15 of them, I believe. I had other series too. I'm thinking of making a web series once I save up for an iPad.
txird please please pursue publishing your work!!!! or yes just ipad it and upload online!!! but fr you can research comic publishers n just email em pics of your sketches or pdfs of your written ideas. why not ?!
jrpaperstack an ex situationship borrow-traded me his copy of moebius and jodorowskys “the incal” for my vertigo “witchcraft“ series and then we stopped talking and now i have his incal book. maybe i should finally read it instead of feeling guilt when i look at it LOL
swag Ha yeah check it out sometime. The designs and art are cool and Jodorowsky always adds in a lot of magic/tarot in the midst of his big sci fi epics.
i inherited most of mine from my uncles, but it can be so fun to follow a specific writer or run. I love Saga if you haven’t read that, and Grant Morrison’s Swamp Thing run is amazing and includes the themes you’re talking about
SilenceDoGood yesss!! swamp things great id love to read it all but ive been scared itd take up too much room i dont have.. i rly want to n should tho. ill check out the other too thank u!!!!its fun looking up a comic shop nearby n going through boxes till u find sumn u like then being determined to find the rest of the series after that
thorns omg plz look into vamps by vertigo/dc. its 90s but still. i also just got told abt and got a first copy of “something is killing the children“ which is a new horror. some older dude who loaned me the walking dead comics(seems overhyped but is fucking great actually btw) told me everyones saying thats the new horror everyones raving about
Comics are great, it’s unfortunate that publishers have made what used to be a hobby that kids with just a bit of pocket money could afford so expensive.
Though like you said, when you look beyond that there’s still lots of great deals to be had! Even DC have started those compact editions which are amazing value
sniffle wait no u have to go to comic shops that have old issues or check ebay!!! ive only ever gotten a “trade”(new edition w multiple issues) twice in my life n they were so over priced but yeah convenient :// every single other comic ive read has been from 50 cents-$5 or a couple times at a library.(im in taxed-ass california too idk where u r from or if that matters) but if u search u dont need to buy a new crispy book thats like $15-$30!!!!! i was turned off from comics in hs cuz i thought they were all pricey ones too
i've been a comic book collector on and off since i was 16. i think that there's no greater high than finding a genuinely wonderful comic book. i've been on hold since the summer to pursue other hobbies but i will be back. gonna rec marvel bc i'm most consistently satisfied with their output but. just go to a shop. pick up the coolest cover you can find. ask the cashier about it. read good comics. read bad comics. read superhero comics. read non-cape comics. read independent comics. read comics from a big shared universe. read a heart-wrenching indie book you've never heard of before. just read em! photo is assorted pics from my unread pile.
Never was that big of a fan of comics growing up, and I'd say that I have a sprinkling of pretentiousness, so lots of media I consume is serious and artistic. But somehow over the past couple months I've been going to comic book stores, buying the new issues and keeping track of when new issues come out. It's something about the escapism I think, and the strong characters that exist in series like the X-Men. A lot of the older Chris Clairmont X-Men is written really well, there are some parts that have aged terribly, but for the most part it's some great stuff. This has been the first thing I've really enjoyed getting into in a while.
Also Wolverine is hot, 5'3" king.
I freaking love reading comics, both physically and digitally (shoutout to the Marvel Unlimited app), and collecting my favorites. Some of the best series I’ve read are Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis and Secret Six by Gail Simone. -Martin
go get magazines or books from the thrift store and make some art. functional sometimes even,,??!?!! this is the lid to a box i will store trinkets in. one of these cut outs is from a magazine i photo copied for a quarter cuz i didnt wanna ruin the original. theres so many possibilities ! ive even used junk mail newspaper ads that usually get thrown away
its so tempting to get a bunch of cheap items from somewhere but since buying a couple long lasting non tarnishing jewelry items and real leather clothes n shoes, wallet and backpack even, i feel like we should go back to the olden days and get things that will last decades on decades
+ my cat gary.
