Menās formal wear is all about fit. Learning how to shop off the rack with the intention of doing alteration is a skill worth developing especially as you may come to find that mens ready to wear is not necessarily cut for your frame. For example, a trouser can be hemmed or taken in but itās really hard to change the seat. A shirt can be cropped or the sleeves shortened, but it needs to fit you through the chest.
I recommend shopping in person and moving in clothes while you try them on. (How do your clothes look when you bend down? When you sit? Can you raise your arms? Can you hug a friend?) You need to be really honest with yourself about how things fit in this process and shopping for the body you have rather than the body you want can be really difficult while working through changes in presentation and self-conception. But like any skill you will only get better at it over time!
My girlfriend put me on to Put This On a few years back. Itās full of intel about the codes and rules of menās dress that I never really learned but having more of a language for these things has improved my eye and vocabulary for menswear many times over. Fwiw I am coming at this as a historically masculine of centre woman who still mostly shops menswearāso while I am very serious about clothing and have been collecting for many years, I am not particularly concerned with passing but am rather pursuing comfort and ease with my body and in my life. All this to say this rec is for the long game!

šŗPutting on clothes is one of the few built- in ways to have fun and be creative in your life without going out of your way to pick up a hobby or pursue a creative passion or career. Itās how you start your day, every day. So take advantage of it! So much of life is about practicality, because the implications of risk-taking have real impacts on your life ā makes sense. Exploring and taking ārisksā with your style is a fairly low-stakes way to break from that a bit and let loose.Ā¹ Now, Iām not saying you should go from full norm-core to runway fashion. But for godās sake, it wouldnāt kill you to try on a couple statement pieces and see what magic may happen! Picking from a stable of staples is boring, like eating the same meal every day. Sure, that meal might be comfortable and filling, but is it FULfilling? So many people make up rules for themselves (āthis color isn't good on meā) and they end up arbitrarily limiting themselves.Ā² If you like the color, it can look good on you!
Now if you wanna dabble, try getting a themed party going. Itās easier to take the plunge when everyone else is doing it, and itās almost impossible not to have fun dressing up in something novel. Try thrifting with a friend that is either already more exploratory than you or open to changing things up. Itās fun as hell to try stuff on, even if you donāt buy anything! Also, hot tip for the people who wear āmenāsā clothesā¦ the womenās section is way better!Ā³ So much more variety in style, shape, fabric, etc.

Just trying to encourage those who might wanna take a bolder step! āāā Ā¹The degree of this is certainly dependent on who you are, where you are ā what pressures youāre facing. Ā²These types of rules may be culturally-imposed and personally internalized, so no shame there. Ā³This may be more restrictive for bigger bois, which points to an issue in womenās wear: they donāt make nearly as much variety in larger sizes, which is bullshit š«¤

ā„ļøI feel like thereās a special connectivity on this app that I havenāt felt in a long time, maybe since early 2010ās tumblr. The fact that you canāt promote yourself like IG is wonderful. The fact that there isnāt mass video content like Tik Tok is great. Itās not this monetized / paid sponsorship app. People are here because they want to be a part of something with nothing to gain besides friendship. š„I think a life rule for me is to surround myself with people who know more / are smarter / are cooler than me and just absorb their aura by listening / observing them. Itās made me the incredibly smart / cool person you all know and love.
I just never thought Iād feel the same way about URL friends. Iām constantly listening to the songs I see posted here, reading the articles, subbing to newsletters, and googling topics that get tossed onto the feed.
Itās nice to know you can become a more rounded person by just absorbing what your mutuals post on here. Iām going to sit on my couch, have a cocktail and digest my lovely feed. Happy Sunday!
