Not underground, but underrated in the sense that people stray a bit away from slice of life animes because theres no drama really. But to me, this anime is so funny, calming, and even though it came out around 2007, the art style and animation hold up well.
plus you can find the whole series subbed and dubbed on yt since it first came out so 😂

this is a perfect lgbtq+ love story its beautifully animated the soundtrack is perfect it’s like a magical girl anime but not really bcs it mainly centers about innocent childhood love. the characters are honestly hilarious there’s LOTS of different innuendos this is a yuri but it doesn’t get very vulgar in any way ( not that there’s anything wrong with that ) ;3 but i highly recommend if you're into shojo / comedy couldn’t speak higher about an anime fr :3 ♡

my taste in anime and manga is a bit all over the place, but if we’re like-minded, then you might just absolutely love these <3
this isn’t in any particular order
01. wonder egg priority
— last three eps or so are rushed and the ending is kinda wonky but overall a good take of the magical girl genre
02. the ice guy and his cool female colleague
— just a chill romance with some supernatural sprinkled in
03. bibliomania
— obscure asf with no official english translation and the original japanese release was limited I believe
04. frieren: beyond journey’s end
— favourite anime alongside flip flappers. a slice of life fantasy
05. apothecary diaries
— fun mystery set in a fictional country inspired by imperial china
06. the summer hikaru died
— a promising horror with implied queer characters. take what I said with a grain of salt since it’s been a while since I read it
07. kaguya-sama: love is war
— hilarious romcom about rich high schoolers minus the protagonist
08. chainsaw man
— a fever dream ngl, but a good one
09. uzumaki
— classic horror. has some romance elements tbh
10. haikyuu
—my original favourite sports anime ^^ it holds a special place in my heart
11. blue lock + episode nagi
— my absolute fave sports manga rn even though I can’t take it seriously at times. kaiser’s my favourite red flag
12. girls’ last tour
— end of the world slice of life. bittersweet
13. violet evergarden
— fyi the relationship is weird, but I just choose to ignore it. aside from that, everything else is beautiful though)
14. flip flappers
— so very underrated! the fandom is pretty much nonexistent. sci-fi magical girls)
15. good night punpun
— definitely not for the faint of heart. depression incarnate and has many mature themes and triggering topics

i recently came across this show while researching some quotes for a close friend's birthday card. she's a huge vampire weekend fan, so i was doing a deep deep dive into ezra koenig and stumbled upon this show from 2018 that was apparently widely criticized at the time (save for a small but loyal fanbase), and never made it past the first season (plus a holiday special). the song that i ended up finding for her birthday card was from the show [friend like u] and, after listening to it, decided i had to watch the show.
and MY GOD. the show was so ahead of its time. it is hilarious and the world building is genuinely interesting - i ended the season wanting to know more about the rules of this world, its history, and genuinely wishing that there was more to watch. the last episode set it up for a whole run of seasons that we sadly never get to see. not to mention a suprisingly star-studded cast - jaden smith does do an ... interesting job voice acting, but imo it just adds to the charm. i am so disappointed that the show originally fell on unappreciative ears :( it would do NUMBERS had it been released more recently.
anyway TLDR, if you're looking for a fun and silly anime that will suck you in and give you a great time for a day or two, neo yokio is the one for you.
