Sometimes there's a specific *sound* that i can't quite put my finger on, but i love it. Any time that happens, I whack the song in a playlist, give it a vague name, and find a photo that matches. No rush, no time limit, keep it hidden until you're happy with it. I think an hour to an hour and a half is perfect for these. Kind of makes it feel like a homemade cassette mix. Sort of want to go an extra step further and make actual mixtapes. If you have any like this put them in the comments I wanna check them out!

I always try to take more time with my playlists and block out an hour or so to start curating one so it doesn't feel like such a throwaway task! sometimes i like to have them as time capsules, but i also love going back to them a month / year etc later and updating them so it feels like an ongoing project. linked an example one :)

This is my love language. I’ve loved It since the days of making mix CDs, so I typically keep them to 18-20 songs. Somewhere around an hour. Playlists can be infinite now, but adding self-imposed limitations forces you to make choices and be intentional. It makes for better playlists. Sometimes I make playlists for people based around a theme (like Fall) but other times it’s a random word or word phrase like “retro futurism.” The goal is always to find those gems that people will hear for the first time and go, “Oh man, I love that song.”

i recently made a cd mixtape for a gift exchange with friends and i had to limit myself to 80 minutes. first step was to stalk the spotify of the playlist receiver, and i added songs that i knew from their playlists to the playlist for them. i also added songs from artists we liked in common, and songs from memories we have together. it ended up being like 7 hours worth of songs so i just sat down for a looooong period of time and cracked away at editing it, trying to just curate that indescribable feeling that you find in a playlist someone made for you. i also like to order songs to make the transitions between them sound good when i’m making a playlist for someone; i imagined them listening to the cd in the car and how it would sound for the songs to switch, would it sound natural or clunky? and a playlist made with a loving hand will always have a beautiful charm to it so don’t worry or overthink it to much. 💌

Koudelka was a photographer who documented Europe from the 60s onwards, recording the lives of travelling people, Soviet invasions, struggles with poverty, and more. He later became a member of the Magnum society and continued his work into old age. If you have the time, it's really worth digging into his work as he had a real eye for striking images that provide a lot of context for the situation he was in. He used to travel with very little besides a sleeping bag and camera so he often experienced the harsher side of life while on the job. At times his photos were smuggled out of the soviet borders, and published anonymously, to keep him safe. Check the link for a good starting point on Magnum's website!

I'm not obsessed with it but it's always sweet when the barista does something cool. This one yesterday made me smile because after seeing a few others I realised the guy was doing Pokémon! Fairly certain mine is mew or Mewtwo, I saw him do a horsea, pikachu, and squirtle too...
