After the weird ass shit that was The Idol I became rightfully scared of The Weeknd and kept my distance lmao But this album? Where do I begin?! This album right here is a MOVIE (quite literally with it's 1 hour and 30 minute runtime) There are no skips? There are no bad songs? I don't know how the hell he did it, but he's magnificiently encapsulated everything that makes his music so compelling, flitting through grappling with trauma, the darkside of fame, heartbreak and his struggles with it all. The Justice, OPN and Mike Dean production just adds to the greatness of this album. I really need to let this one marinate but notable mentions so far include Sao Paulo, Cry for me, Opening Night

i am one of the biggest Weeknd haters i know. i have never in my life liked a single song he has put out and every time i've heard him sing i always skip. this changed, however, last night, when i listened to his new album "hurry up tomorrow." i was initially listening to it just to see how bad it was (rollout took almost a year and i've seen so much about it) but...i have to say...i can't stop listening to it. the production on this record, as someone put it on reddit, sounds expensive. mike dean, oneohtrix point never, justice, pharell williams, and fucking giorgio moroder come together to make one of the most lush, cinemative, synth-driven pieces of music I have ever listened to. please, don't be intimidated by the run time or some of the slower songs - there are so many amazing moments buried deep in this record that I am still picking up after a few listens. (p.s. i included a qobuz link because fuck streaming services. pay for music when you can!)

The Weeknd is one of those artist that the bigger he has gotten, the less I have liked him. I feel as if he has become more of a caricature of himself. BUT, this compilation album was him at his best and most true. He samples Beach House and Souxie and the Banshees, covers MJ, gives a nod to Cocteau Twins. There’s a depth to these albums that is lacking with his mainstream success. I love when an album really creates an atmosphere and brings me into the world of it, and he does that flawlessly. This is the closest I’ll get to his specific flavor of drugs, partying, and strippers, and I relish in it.

I absolutely adore the whole album and think it’s a masteripiece, it’s just sosmething about these 3 songs in a row specifically i can’t stooop. Don’t know if it’s about the flawless transitions or the way the panned the synths here or the cohesive theme, but just aaaa :,)

a myth dating from the victorian period, these tiny, decorative glass bottles were wept into by those mourning their loved ones. once the tears collected eventually evaporated, this marked the end of their mourning period. this myth has been debunked by scientists, with others saying that these bottles were in fact used to store perfumes, but i'm very obsessed with this romantic notion and will be sticking to it!

i see solitude as metamorphosis. you need that time in the cocoon to really check in with yourself and the joy of that comes from how you'll gain a deeper understanding of yourself. sometimes i spend SO much time with myself that i get SO BORED that I HAVE to venture outside of myself. when i say venture, i mean challenging myself in how i self- express which will in turn, nourish my interactions with others when i choose to seek company. proceeding to create art, but trying new methods. going down youtube rabbit holes of things i am interested in so i can discover new references. cooking a meal without following a recipe and surprising myself. making the space i am in super cosy (candles, snacks on deck, music, blankets) going on long walks and picking up conversations with strangers through shared observations of life around us. watching music festivals/boiler rooms and dancing around my room like a mad man. once you feel comfortable in being by yourself, you'll be more aware of what you need from your company and when you seek it, you'll be a lot more intentional about it and cherish it even more.

*shines bright light in your face* But WHY do you like what you like?! Echoing a sentiment from Tyler, the Creator, where he tweeted for people to expand on what they liked about his songs and delve into the WHY (i.e the bridge, chords, riffs) Truly believe it’s so so important to be able to articulate why things bring us enjoyment, pleasure and giddiness, because that just makes way for one to obsess/ research and learn more about said thing! This is basically a gratitude post for PI, I just love blagging about what makes this Little Life of Mine more bearable !!!
