I feel old typing this, but life has never felt so isolating. Everywhere I go everyone is on their phones all the time. It’s especially hard to meet people and make connections when everyone prefers tiktok over communicating with the person next to them. Even when I try to go out with friends everyone is glued to their screens, like i’m sorry I can’t compete with that instagram reel on your timeline, but also why are you on your phone at dinner? or during a movie? or when i’m sitting right across from you?

It’s really true, and so dangerous. These supercomputers that give us so much also enable us to distance ourselves from the intimacy we need with the people right in front of us.

With being so distanced from Instagram and TikTok now, I find myself running through the pages of apps on my phone, searching for something to do. Each time this habitual routine occurs, I feel so disappointed in how trained I am to believe that joy, entertainment, and connection solely come from the screen in my hand. It’s a bitter realization that the world around me has been ignored for so long, while offering me a far more satisfactory experience of life.

i’m definitely not the first person here to make a rec about this, but my tired brain is truly rejoicing. i have a very hard time completely leaving it since i communicate and share creative work through the app, but i think i’ve decided i will only be on it once a week or when i need/want to post. that’s all. as an already anxious person, seeing the same anxiety-inducing general information (as in something i could easily find on google or a news app) be reposted by 20+ people on their stories has become HELL, especially these last few weeks. not only that, but the constant push of personal opinions about such matters (even if i agree with them) just seems to warp your perception of people. maybe i’m just a wimp, but i don’t think humans were meant to see each other in such a way; we’re not so flashy and impulsive face to face. add the endless scrolling onto that, and it’s downright exhausting and kills productivity. there is so much more dimension and depth to humans and life than what is said or done or seen through this screen. can we please go back to flip phones?

its a wormhole that everyone in this generation has unfortunarely been sucked into (including me). I wish we could just.. chill. I feel like the second there isnt something immediately going on IRL, everyone and their mom goes scrolling through their phone. I wish more people tried to just exist in the world, without a phone in their hand. Its not that hard, and it's actually relaxing and nice to look around and gaze. I wish more people agreed with me (especially my friends)

One of my fav books. In Tokyo, after dark, a young girl wanders around experiencing city life. It‘s split up into hours of the night and you can read in real time if you’re dedicated enough. The author loves referencing pop culture too, If you’re into that i’d definitely check it out
