tiktok has absolutely over-romanticised this story but I am not Immune to it I am having so many feelings. She spent her whole life having to make her own light and the last thing she saw was the first rays of light that were already there for her. She fought so hard to make it to the surface and we will likely never know why. I dread to think how much pain she must have been in, but I hope she was at peace ๐
A meditation on grief, loneliness, and redemption that never feels in danger of being pat or mawkish. Also made me feel sad and nostalgic for a time when our lives werenโt inundated with screens.
black queer history is FULL of forgotten legends who have shaped mainstream culture and continue to have a lasting impact on fashion, language, art & performance. โจParis Is Burning immortalises and preserves the legacy and the stories of the people featured in this film along with the spaces, community and families they created for themselves in a society that consistently marginalised and discriminated against them. this is an essential watch!!!
