this is a recommendation to myself: nothing and nobody is perfect—let that fact be freeing. write that first draft of the novel you’ve been thinking about writing even if the first draft isn’t great, keep working on that hobby you’re learning even if you feel out of your depth, try not to fret over the minutiae of everything.

Nothing is as powerful than just sitting down and doing it. I have been plagued by my perfectionism. even my mood has to be in the correct zone before starting something but that makes me not do anything. if you want to write, pick up a pen and a notebook. dont overthink. jut write anything that pops into your mind. sames goes with starting anything.

setting a timer for ~20 minutes and just writing without stopping until the timer goes off is *really* good - because at the end of it you have a draft you can revise, which i think is easier and feels a lot more like making progress than emotionally preparing to write something you might not like. dan harmon has this quote that i think was really helpful to getting me to see the value of just getting the reps in (without all the self-loathing): *“My best advice about writer’s block is: the reason you’re having a hard time writing is because of a conflict between the GOAL of writing well and the FEAR of writing badly. By default, our instinct is to conquer the fear, but our feelings are much, much, less within our control than the goals we set, and since it’s the conflict BETWEEN the two forces blocking you, if you simply change your goal from “writing well” to “writing badly,” you will be a veritable fucking fountain of material…Prove it. It will go faster. And then, after you write something incredibly shitty in about six hours, it’s no problem making it better in passes, because in addition to being absolutely untalented, you are also a mean, petty CRITIC. You know how you suck and you know how everything sucks and when you see something that sucks, you know exactly how to fix it.”*

It's way too easy to over-write, over-paint, over-create. Just because it felt easy doesn't mean that it's bad. In fact, that zen feeling of inspiration *should* feel effortless. Don't let your work ethic ruin something good. At the very least, step back before you do more. If it needs more work, you'll know the next time you look at it.

it’s a struggle to try and stay positive (read: not fall into a deep pit of despair and general hopelessness) throughout all of this. i work in a public library in a purple state that has thankfully yet to see massive pushback from organizations trying to censor resources in public and school libraries, but that may change at any moment. i don’t know if the federal funding freeze will have any impact on public library funding and what that means for me going forward. more importantly, what that would mean for the people who rely on the library. it’s too easy to get sucked into just… general malaise about our current situation. it certainly doesn’t help that i’ve been sick with the flu for the past three days either. i recently read anxious people by fredrik backman for a book club i facilitate at my library and there’s a passage towards the end that i haven’t been able to stop thinking about since i finished the book: “The truth. There isn't any. All we've managed to find out about the boundaries of the universe is that it hasn't got any, and all we know about God is that we don't know anything. So the only thing a mom who was a priest demanded of her family was simple: that we do our best. We plant an apple tree today, even if we know the world is going to be destroyed tomorrow.”
