i love february and the season of valentine’s day. the whole month is pink and red, heart shaped things, i love cards and valentines, the act of giving because you love someone, planning galentines day or anti-valentines plans, dinners with lovers, or doing absolutely nothing and hiding away from the crowds on the actual day. it doesn’t have to be a hallmark holiday. for a lover like me it’s a perfect time to soak in the feelings and the colors and the wanting of it all.

The superstition is this: on the first day of the month, one is supposed to say “Rabbit, rabbit” to ensure a month of good luck. I adore this superstition, like making a circle of protective salt around you for the entire 28, 30, or 31 days of a month. in theory, it’s supposed to be the first words you utter on that 1st day, but I make my life easier by just making sure I say it at some point during the day. I love superstitions, but I like also throwing in a bit of my own luck in there. So say “rabbit, rabbit,” why don’t ya? I’ll say it several extra times in honor of those who read this a little later on.

Yes I work in a cemetery. My favorite part is saying hello to the graves. Judy Garland, Johnny Ramone, Rudolph Valentino, Pee-wee Herman. Honestly, it’s a sweet tribute being around them. I make it a point to visit cemeteries in most cities I visit, but this one holds a special place in my heart. It’s one of my top two.

Well I guess I’m my mother’s child because I now have a candle I never plan on burning. It feels so defiant. The fairy candle is my friend now. I will age, but she will not
