if you’ve never had one, it’s like a grapefruit but bigger and with a soft spongy rind that’s fun to squish. the flavor is bright and sweet and not bitter at all. you have to peel the thin layers around each section very carefully because the individual juice sacs fall apart easily. i had never peeled one myself until recently because they were always available to buy pre-peeled at markets in Thailand growing up. i bought one to bring to a friend’s Lunar New Year party this year and we sat there peeling it slowly and meditatively, missing friends we celebrated with last year and contemplating the year ahead. now whenever i feel sad or crazy, i’ve been buying a pomelo to soothe my soul.

It’s a fruit like a grapefruit but more beautiful and subtle. If you peel it right, with all the pith and skin gone, when you eat it you will feel very much like a little king. It’s also a nice word to say.

It takes like 40 mins to peel a pomelo, the principal ancestor of the grapefruit. It's pomelo season rn and this guy will show you how it's done, with some avant-garde music to spice it up. Surrender to the process, like some primate who took 7 years to master the foraging technique. The juice to crunch ratio is unmatched.

i’m definitely not the first to post about this but it deserves its flowers! honey pomelo is perhaps the best citrus, possibly even the best fruit, (for a girl like me) … totally eclipses all the other ones in size, but also in taste! its perfectly mildly sweet and ever so slightly bitter… a refreshing snack that doesn’t veer at all too far into something that could be deemed offensive or “too much” flavour profile wise…! the one bone i have to pick with it is that you have to peel each cluster and remove the seeds but they’re so large and easy to pick out that it’s merely a small obstacle to enjoy the best creation ever :p
