This was an amazing read. I read Unbought and Unbossed right after the election results came out. Like many I was very upset and angry when I woke up on November 6th. As I began to spiral about the state of democracy in America Mrs. Chisholm calmed a lot of the fear I possessed. "Political pioneer Shirley Chisholm—activist, member of the House of Representatives, and onetime presidential candidate—consistently broke barriers and inspired generations of American women, especially women of color. Unbought and Unbossed is her story, told in her own words..." Throughout the book, I was constantly inspired by Mrs. Chisholm's hard-work and dedication. She truly cared for her constituents, unlike many politicians that have called Capital Hill home. And although there are not enough people like Mrs. Chisholm working in Washington at this moment, this book is a reminder that there are people who care. There are people who want to help the American people, not the corporations. I find this book to be a guiding light over the next four years—a reminder that we can come back from this administration.

Read this book!!! “ ‘You have to give people who are new to this movement and to activism in general some way in.’ For some people, that’s going to a protest, or seeing a documentary, or reading a book, that gets them thinking, ‘Maybe I can do something.’ And so no, I don’t believe one person’s vote amounts to shit. But it can get people in the mindset of recognizing they can fight back against the Powers That Be in some way.”

just finished this book and it was so lovely! the passages on art as a method of revolution and keeper of community really struck me, here’s a bit - “Before we wrote books, we sang songs, we painted on walls, we told stories by the fire. We wove our histories into fabrics, and our dreams into baskets. We sculpted our gods out of clay. Art is deeply human, and in communities of color, our art is what has endured above all else. As white supremacy and colonization toppled our buildings, deposed our leaders, banned our languages, even stole our bodies- we still kept our art alive. The threads, the brush strokes, the sung notes of our art kept us connected to our ancestors and to one another..... Art is what makes our communities, communities.”

What can I say about this that hasn’t already been said? Having grown up on Twitter and seeing first hand the rise of the right wing conspiracy theory movement, to the point the app became miserable and unusable, understanding the specifics of how this happened was fascinating and I couldn’t put it down. The chapters on Israel/Palestine and the history of the “Jewish question” was really important to read and I haven’t been able to stop discussing it with people at every opportunity. Naomi’s account of her time in Palestine, dealing with the IDF is really shocking if ultimately unsurprising. I really feel like this is one of the most essential reads of the 21st century.
