I didn’t even know they made Ugg boots in this style.

Currently, I am writing this while literally wearing my famous (lol I just say that) pair of black fuzzy UGG boots. UGGs are phenomenal, okay?! As a disabled woman - spending most of my time in a wheelchair constantly, throughout my life it’s been very hard for me to take footwear very seriously as I feel like nobody’s actually ever looking at my feet. Unless I’m walking runway, or shooting for a client… then people are observing my feet, perhaps. I really treasure my feet feeling comfortable on a day-to-day basis, and UGGs really deliver that for me! I don’t think that UGGs are ugly, I think that people are just bad at styling themselves and aren’t brave enough like me to wear UGGs with almost anything. Now now, I’m not saying I wear UGGs all the time because that is not at all true actually. What I am saying though - is to not sleep on UGGs.

As a born and bred Lower East Sider I have dedicated the last 25 years of my life to trashing on anything considered basic. As a shit fucker East Village dwelling teenager, one of the most basic things I could think of was living in Brooklyn. I bitched every time I had to go to parties there, was an actual shithead when I had to visit friends there, and only began venturing out to Williamsburg on purpose at 17 when I started fucking a New Hampshire transplant who lived on Kent Ave and worked as a freelance photographer. Though fear not, upon receiving my prefrontal cortex this past August, I have become less of an asshole. When I dropped out of SUNY Purchase in 2017 and moved back home after a year of absolute hell on earth, my parents threw me out of their nest on 9th street and I was forced to move somewhere more affordable (lol) Brooklyn. I worked in a dingy neon sign shop, wore carhart overalls un-ironically and wanted to cease to exist. Visiting home was now a pilgrimage and Brooklyn felt like the suburb where I would inevitably rot and crumble and become irrelevant. Another thing that I decided was basic as a fucky fucker teen was wearing Uggs. I essentially popped out of my mother’s womb on 33rd and 1st the summer of 98’ scoffing at girls stomping around like uncoordinated puppies in their fluffy boots and leggings, calling them all gentrifiers and cunts. I have been clean from East Village living for 7 years now, and have not only become a Brooklyn lover (ā€œit just feels so GOOD to go HOME to BROOKLYNā€) but have also become the biggest Ugg stan of them all and I will tell you why. It is not because y2k style is trending, or because I’ve become a basic bitch now that I spend more time in Williamsburg than I’d like to admit, but it’s because they’re really fucking cozy and New York winter sucks. And I have a prefrontal cortex now so I am no longer slinging the motto ā€œFashion has no temperatureā€. In the past 7 years I’ve gone from a cold hard LES girlie snorting mystery drugs off sticky surfaces at Happy Endings (iykyk) to filling my cozy Brooklyn apartment with fluffy stuff and men who work in tech. (Don’t get me wrong, I still snort mystery drugs off of sticky surfaces, I just test them for fentanyl first, buy them with tech money that’s not mine and go into the inevitable morning after depression on a sheepskin adorned couch in Brooklyn) SO, given that I am a (mostly) changed woman now, Iā€˜ll give you the tea on Ugg. If you buy your Uggs from Ugg they are not really Uggs anymore. The company was sold and they are made in China now. The sheepskin is shit, the quality is bad and the company is literally just creating fast fashion SHITCRAP. If you want a good pair of Uggs the original manufacturer is still hand making them to order (yes, made to order, sustainable girlies we love that) in Australia. They are just doing it under the name Ugg Since 1974, which is such a slay. I have a pair of the bomber boots and they are actually snow proof because they’re water resistant (which in girl math means water proof) and I wear them every day. Even when I go visit my little brother in the East Village (who later inherited my parents rent controlled apartment and became far cooler than I’ll ever be which is not fucking fair at all but thats a different story). Rant over- go get yourself some Uggs, its cold out there. Xx Liv

i canceled my Spotify account over the summer and have spent the last few months rebuilding my digital music library on a refurbished iPod Touch. reading critiques of the app (and it’s enshittification), i realized i wasn’t even sure of my own musical tastes and preferences. i had stopped picking for myself, stopped seeking out new music, ceasing to know how to choose what i wanted or articulate what i like. breaking free from the algorithm has been such a joy! i’m borrowing gobs of music from the library, rebuilding my old playlists, and consuming more music than i have in years. and better yet, my data isn’t being tracked by Spotify and i own what’s in my personal library. further, my receptors are more open when i’m out in the world exposed to music, searching for recommendations in an organic way.

i’ve been trying to articulate why i enjoy this space so much. yes, the UX is reminiscent of Tumblr and the early days of the internet. and there’s genuine sincerity and vulnerability on here that makes it feel really cozy and real, which i haven’t felt online in at least a decade. but i think what’s undergirding my love of this space is how anti-capitalist it feels. most of the recs everyone shares are vibe-checks, quality of life shifts, meditations and offers, music and movies, just plain good art. i don’t feel compelled to buy anything when i come here. i feel excited and pumped to be a cheerleader, find connection, find common ground. and FWIW the recs i’ve shared that have gotten the most traction are my suggestions for leading a less capitalistic / consumerist life (quitting Amazon, getting off of Spotify, building community to take care of you and your things). all of this is to say, i love it here and i love you guys.

hear me out—this one might feel impossible, but i quit purchasing items on Amazon in 2018 and cancelled my GoodReads account shortly after. i did some serious reflection and realized i’d become super reliant upon, and frankly, quite used to the instant gratification of purchasing something and knowing i’d have it within a day. that’s not normal. the labor practices, economics, and environmental impacts of getting what you want from the internet delivered quickly and right to your door are skewed. i was filling a void in myself with mindless purchases. i’m aware that they service a huge swath of the internet (Amazon Web Services), own Whole Foods and Abe Books, and will likely take over more businesses we like and rely on. weaning off and avoiding entirely is very very hard, but it can also be a measured decision. that said, i know that it is a privilege to abstain from Amazon. i am able bodied, i don’t have kids, i have access to a car, i live in an urban environment with access to a lot of stuff at my fingertips. but making the choice to break out of the Amazon loop has ultimately been better for my pocketbook and better for my relationship to these mega-tech-companies that have their fingers in everything. in contrast, i’m becoming more interested in alternate economies, like bartering and sharing. i love the idea of having commonly shared tools and items (tool libraries are very cool). we don’t need to own it all, we have each other. interested in exploring more? the zine pictured below is a great start, and summarizes a much larger book by the same author on how to resist the leviathan that is Amazon.
