does anyone have advice for getting editing jobs? i'm incredibly good at like giving comments and suggestions in a google doc, and all of the friends and peers i've done it for have loved my work, but since it's just in people's personal files i don't really have a portfolio or anything to show for it. how do i go about getting paid to do this kind of work? how do i build up my experience when nobody wants to be the first to give me a job? it's literally the one thing i'm good at.

get into tutoring and helping people with applications and personal statements, the demand for that is usually very high and will show as experience for the more industry editing jobs

offer cheap editing services to friends. find a publication you like and see if they need volunteer editors. when people ask what you do, say freelance editing or simply "i'm an editor." join an editing society group like ACES and get your foot in the community!

you honestly might be better finding a contract gig or a more full time corporate or agency position, though you’ll have a harder time landing interviews without any experience or a portfolio. honestly, make work up. seriously! pick a local business or a brand and create your own campaigns for them. redo an existing campaign that you think could be better or come up with something entirely unique. You could blog about that process. figure out what niche of writing you want—technical is very different from marketing which can be different from social media which is not the same as PR. challenge yourself to rewrite every piece of material you come across — emails, flyers, commercial scripts. find local businesses that may be looking for ā€œcreativeā€œ or ā€œmarketingā€ help. I’m a copywriter rn, I feel your struggle! DM me if you have more qs šŸ’–

I’m in a similar boat where my career is something I enjoy, but I cannot deal with the people I’m working with. What I’ve found is that if you’ve got the time, doing little creative projects for friends/ people whose missions you support is a great way to build a portfolio and strengthen connections. You can do it for money or favors, either way you get the satisfaction from doing your work, the physical material to use if (or when) you start looking for employment elsewhere, and a better connection with the person you worked for so they’ll be more likely to bring you back for another project! TL;DR - Freelance in your spare time, but don’t take a project you wouldn’t be proud to put your name on, don’t work for a person you wouldn’t want to be associated with, keep all that you can, and help bring othersā€˜ missions into reality without sacrificing your own values!

i love being alone. i know who i am when i'm alone and i love myself when i'm alone. when i'm around people it's easy to forget and i get lost and aimless. how do you share parts of yourself without feeling overexposed? even just sharing creative work makes me feel like it's not mine any more and makes me doubt the part of myself that went into making it. but i also feel so stagnant when i'm not putting anything out into the world. where is the balance? how do you deal with this?
