i don't know why, but i come back to this short story from time to time. okay, i do know why. i think. it's so simple, but i like the sentiment and how it basically says… choose kindness—it's the only logical choice. anyway, it's by the guy who wrote the martian, andy weir.

A fantastic, underappreciated gem of a short story. A tour-de-force of a philosophical mindfuck. A shockabuku*, ala Grosse Pointe Blank. The Egg is all of these things, and more. Go read it now, it won't take long. * "A swift, spiritual kick to the head that alters your reality forever"

His Short stories are so delightful and nutritious. thinking about technology and its utility in a practical but also creative way. a great antidote to ai doomerism.

i truly don't know what the title was, but when i was probably about 14 my dad heard i was getting into writing. he gave me a little book he said my uncle had written some time ago. no idea if it was published anywhere, but it told this story about a robot/cyborg guy questioning his life and searching for meaning. i totally forgot about it until this point but it really inspired me back then.

»in an effort to combat overpopulation, the postmortem social network 'anvil' is released.« okay obviously, i don't rec or look forward to a social network like that. it sounds fucking horrible. but, but, but—the music video is dark and disturbing and absolutely beautiful. and the track slaps, too. just drove a friend home, and after dropping her off, i queued this one up and slowly drove back through the night on almost-empty streets. okay, you don't have to be rude about it. but you can actually say to objects, "hey, object, you're another kind of object now." when reading before bed last night, i couldn't remember where my bookmark was. so i just threw out my arm into space, let my hand find... something. a drink coaster. and—yeah. i just threw it in there. in the book. and it worked! (at least, i think it did. i haven't tried reading again today.)

it's so good. i've done it since i was a kid. have you ever tried it? nighttime is the best, here's how i do it: 1. i walk into a room with a heavy, cozy, persian carpet on the floor. (in my apartment, there's only one such room.) 2. i lie down (on the floor). 3. i listen to music. it's pretty easy, really. try it! i've attached a screen grab where you can see how it's done. that's hirayama from perfect days (great film). here are three tracks for nighty night-time listening in no particular order. • when u sleep • you have telescoping arms and fingers (but I still love yooou!) • et bånd
