Such a strange movie. usually i like movies with no real plot but i was scared the whole time. Morvern girl what is wrong with u. But laawwwdd i know why my film studies prof chose it. a movie with barely any structure and insane visuals and it Still has substance— something directors now have no idea how to do successfully… (cough cough saltburn cough cough longlegs) so haunting visually and emotionally i’ve been thinking about it all week

Longlegs

It was cool. Very quiet film, sound design was amazing so it had that going for it. it has a very unsettling atmosphere, I hate when there’s a wide shot and you question what’s around the corner. Super effective throughout the whole film, there were moments when I wanted to leave because I can’t stand that shit, makes my skin crawl man. My girl also kept saying Longlegs was “serving” and that he was “that girl” so that made the movie funnier. Good time. Don’t know if I’ll rewatch though.

Cuckoo and oddity

Cuckoo was unexpectedly emotional and had me crying in the theater. It leaned more towards campy sci-fi thriller B-movie to me and the trailer unfortunately blew its load on some of the best moments (as trailers often do) but I enjoyed it—gorgeous and fun to watch! Oddity is atmospheric and perfectly executed as a slow burn spooky story with a modern gothic feel. I regret not having seen it in theaters during its limited run because I’m sure it would have been especially intense but it was still pretty scary to watch at home. Giddy thrills! Also I just finished Immaculate… I wanted to hate it and Sydney Sweeney badly needs a dialogue coach but it was a fun vibey Giallo homage (thematically not visually). I love how goofy and over the top it was. Impressive that she managed to find a way to show her boobs in a movie where she plays a nun (Notice Longlegs is not on this list. I feel like I’m harshly critical towards it because it was so ambitious but didn’t stick the landing and could have been better without exposition dump and loss of tension at the end. I would have preferred a little more mystery and ambiguity and also maybe more esoteric occult elements… I absolutely hated The Blackcoat’s Daughter but I could have loved this one and instead I feel lukewarm towards it 💔)

30/31: Lake Mungo (2008)

this movie is such a slow burner and then it hits you with the most bone-chilling horror sequence i’ve ever seen. i watched this when i was pretty young and it gave me nightmares for weeks.
