i have nothing against bearing your soul to the world from time to time but when you’re collaborating on something it’s much easier to emotionally distance yourself from the thing you’ve made as opposed to feeling like you’ve given the world a piece of yourself that you have to trust that it won’t smash into a million pieces (or worse, completely ignore) you get to be all like “i think *we* could improve this“ instead of “i completely fucked this up.“ counter-intuitively, it’s great for the ego, and you get to learn a lot from the other person(s) involved

this is of course an obvious fact that most serious creative people are aware of but i have until very recently only created my Art™️ alone in a cave with a box of scraps so it’s really novel to me

I tend to be really hard on myself when it comes to creative projects, but lately I've been trying to relax and enjoy it more, and I think it shows in the work. I feel more daring, more invested, more inspired. I find it's a lot easier to spark new ideas when you aren't wasting mental energy fixating on whether something is good but instead focused on having fun. People are intuitive. They can pick up what you're putting down.

It's way too easy to over-write, over-paint, over-create. Just because it felt easy doesn't mean that it's bad. In fact, that zen feeling of inspiration *should* feel effortless. Don't let your work ethic ruin something good. At the very least, step back before you do more. If it needs more work, you'll know the next time you look at it.

like writing a song then rewriting it and changing almost everything about it. i think this is a great way to curb overthinking and get out of a creative block. jeff tweedy has a quote in the wilco documentary about destroying and reconstructing his songs where he says, “there’s no reason at all not to destroy it. we made it so it’s ours to destroy, and that’s liberating and exciting in a really creative way” everything you make doesn’t need to be precious or set in stone. it has helped me a lot recently to allow my art to be like clay that can be reshaped into anything it wants to be.

spent the last two weeks working on an interactive guide, recommendations database, and digital library (link depot) to help get people off of social media. the first draft is done now, and it's at the link to this post. it's still very much a work in progress (the library is especially thin atm) - which is why i wanted to share it here before unleashing it upon my IRL friends and the general public. i welcome any and all feedback, bug reports, and suggestions for things to add. i will be pushing updates to it out like a madman in the coming weeks, so be sure to check back every so often to see new additions to the database and library. additionally, i am still on the hunt for newsletters from local venues / community organizations / magazines / newspapers, etc. the only cities i have remotely covered so far are nyc, orlando, denver, brisbane, and little bits of worcester and chicago. if you know anything in your area that fits the bill, send it my way!
