flip flappers is a sci-fi magical girl original anime (meaning it isn’t adapted from a source material) which is an interesting combination of genres to say the least. it started airing in japan in 2016 and has since then retained a close to nonexistent fandom. however, the few people who’ve picked it up have highly rated it—one of them being me.
we follow cocona, a seemingly ordinary middle school student living a normal life with her grandmother, and papika, an energetic and eccentric—manic pixie even—girl, as they go on adventures in an alternate dimension called pure illusion.
I’ve heard that some have found it boring after the first few episodes (probably due to the seemingly rinse and repeat plot), but I would suggest watching it all the way. it gets very interesting and the animation and creativity put into the series is beautiful.
it’s only 12 eps, each one being around 20 mins long.
