My dentist told me this because my jaw is super tight and aches throughout the day. If it aches in the morning, it means you grind at night. throughout the day means you hold tension there. Longterm solution is to reduce the stress in your life (you can try breathing exercises?), but short term you can suck on any candy (though preferablh sugar free) because it prevents you from clenching your jaw. Definitely no gum at all. Hope this helps :)
