a master in Japanese joinery gave a short lecture and demonstration to my carpentry class. he described Japanese carpentry as a whole body experience, and said that it depends on sensitivity, dexterity, going slow, staying grounded, listening to yourself, staying in the struggle, and learning from your mistakes. staying in the struggle means you grow and learn; if you stay outside of the struggle, you don’t grow. “eat your own shadow“

I took a beginning carpentry class through the local community college, and it was one of the best educational experiences I've had! Look at this shed we built together on a farm in El Sobrante! I learned about working with other people from all walks of life, made some new friends, and gained practical skills. (Also, I got OSHA certification and took a "math for the trades" class.) I'm excited to take residential plumbing and electrical next fall, and hopefully I'll gain enough skills to remodel my bathroom. :-)
